question about ties for men hunt riders

Having read a couple of threads about hunt attire, I have a “newbie” question. Is it appropriate (or acceptable) in the hunt field for a man rider to wear a regular neck tie (as opposed to a stock tie) in hunt attire…this assumes a dark colored hunt coat, canary vest, breeches and black boots and a plain dress shirt.

Thanks for your comments.

Only for cubbing, which is informal.

Women can wear men’s neck ties as well.

Worn with a dress shirt/button down shirt.

No canary vest. Canary vest is formal. IF you wear a vest for cubbing, it would be tattersall. Some folks skip the tattersall vest in warmer climates.

For the formal season - both wear stock ties.

All the other elements of attire you describe mean formal season and for formal season my answer would be no. It would not be appropriate to substitute a regular necktie for a stock.

Stocks are not too expensive and usually very easily borrowed, perhaps whoever is inviting you out to guest hunt can lend you one.

Have fun!

During cubbing I just use a white dress shirt (usually one of my older ones) and a regular tie (again an older one) with a tweed jacket. Once we are into formal season it is a stock tie.

It is confusing, especially given the cover of the Dover catalog - yes it’s a photo op, but he is “Charles Frederick Otis Ferry, (born 1 November 1982) is a British fox hunting enthusiast and prominent pro-hunting protestor. He is the son of singer Bryan Ferry and model Lucy Helmore. Ferry is joint master huntsman of the South Shropshire hunt.” from Wikipedia.
So, OP if you wish to be a trendsetter, with the attire you describe the tie MUST be white.

just my 2 cents!

There are those hunts that don’t consider regular mens ties appropriate for ratcatcher ever. They prefer stock ties all year. But for cubbing colored stock ties (colors/patterned cloth/paisley etc) are always appropriate. I have a plain vanilla (yellowish white) colored one I wear for cubbing as it goes with every color cubbing coat and pattern of tweed. Pastel colored oxford cloth stock ties always look good with everything. Patterned cloth stocks look good with solid cubbing jackets or the tweed/herringbones if they are color coordinated with a stripe.
So…stock ties are always right!!!
