Question for the Goat people.

I have two goats Loki and Luna. A neighbor who previously owned goats showed me how to trim Loki’s feet and then I tried it on Luna. My neighbor thought I did a good job. I used their goat foot trimmers. So I will need to buy my own. What are the best goat foot trimmers? Thanks in advance.

I’ve only had goats for a few months, so am a novice, but my friend who gave me the goats also gave me the trimmer, and she’s a pro. They’re from Valley Vet - goat hoof trimmers, the brand is zenport, and they’re about $20. Having trouble with the link — it’s item #19148. They’re super sharp, fit in my hand well, and are just very easy to use. My goats are squirmy and young, but big Nubians, so I need to get it done pretty quickly to keep them happy. I just did them yesterday and was once again very happy with these. I haven’t tried to sharpen them yet — might ask my barefoot trimmer to do that for me when he’s here.

I buy mine from Premier 1 Supplies. Much better quality than the brands available at local feed stores and/or TSC. The serrated edge is awesome for tough hooves. Going on 5 years of use now, and still have not needed to be sharpened.

Thanks for the input. Moving to DC, Premier 1 has several different types of goat hoof trimmers, do you know the kind that you have?

Premier only carries one serrated goat trimming shear:

OK well this is what I had pulled up when I looked on premier (4 different goat hoof trimmers). It looks like 3 of the 4 have serrated edges.

Sorry…

This is my favorite pair. I also have the orange handled style for my kids with smaller hands, but I like the big white ones better for me. They have less resistance and “pop” open easier between cuts.

Funny! Search totally wasn’t showing me all of those at all.

Thanks. For now their are feet are lovely… but that will only last so long!

Another vote for the Premier1 tools. Those folk will take good care of you and I love their catalogs. I have the orange ones for sheep, which I see are currently backordered. Having nice hoof trimmers makes all the difference to make it easy, doable, and safe for both you and the animal. I like the serrated blades because they slip less. Also, I recommend doing them during the wet season rather than during the dry when possible.

Poltroon, I agree, feet were damp due to recent rain for their trim and I’m sure that made it much easier! Thanks for the advice about serrated edges. I will order trimmers that have serrated edges.

It is always easier when the feet are damp and when temps are above freezing. I use the shears from Jeffers and they look like all the others except they are not serrated. I have a sharpener which is nice to keep them cutting good.

I don’t know what you do for a serrated shear? Maybe they don’t dull as fast? But then I do 22 goats when I trim and they dull quickly…
