Question...what body part do you measure when sizing a simple harness?

For safety reasons…I want to get a simple strap harness for my spooky/timid young dog when we make the move across the country. I don’t trust her not to slip her collar if she panics during the trip. Is the measurement around her girth behind her front legs or across her chest up to her withers?? Thanks.

It depends on the style of harness where you measure. Some are girth only right behind the elbow, some are girth plus neck.

Select the harness you feel will work and read how the manufacturers suggests you measure for size.

I have a few different harnesses (one for walking, one for scentwork plus a few more trying different styles). Each one had different measurements.

For my walking harnesses, I like Lupine Pet Always fun prints, a few different styles (I tried a few before I settled on the one that fit my boys the best), good quality.

Nope, no financial gain from Lupine… I just like their harnesses.

Check out the “Halti No Pull Harness”= has attachments clips in two areas, comes w/leash w/ clips on both ends and tightens when doggy pulls too hard. Much safer for an excited dog.

I love Lupine collars, good quality and last a long time.

Thanks. The dog walks PERFECTLY with a leather collar and leash and at home she is a “by your side” farm dog, who minds well unless she gets spooked!! She is just weird in strange environments…she was an “unsocialized”, rescue and sees no strangers at our remote farm. I just want a way to link her collar to a “pull off proof” syrcingle type “thing”.

@crosscreeksh I think wise to be planning ahead for something a bit more escape proof than a straight collar. I’ve been uses harness for 5 or 6 years now. I choose styles that don’t pull on the throat and allow freedom in the shoulder and fit well around both in front of the foreleg and girth to reduce the ability for a frightened dog to escape.

I’d get a harness and try it before you need it as some dogs don’t like harnesses or don’t like the style.

You could also consider using a martingale but for a frightened dog, if the martingale gets loose, your dog might also get loose

Thanks. She will be in a truck with us and two other “buddy” dogs…I just want to ensure that she doesn’t back out of the collar if she gets frightened.

I have a JRT and I always have to double-check the measurements around the rib cage to make sure things will fit him He has a well-sprung rib cage (but not grossly so) and often needs a large size even though he’s only 12 3/4" at the shoulder. In every other product, he’s a medium, but anything around the rib cage I have to verify.

The Halti leash DOES attach to both the collar and harness which is why I got it, it’s safer than a simple collar or simple harness.

Thanks. That is my plan…snap to the collar, but safety strap back to the harness!! She is very sweet and well behaved, but timid with strangers… we Almost Never see strangers at our farm and I don’t want to risk losing her at a “potty break” if she gets frightened!!
