Questions about a saddle

How much give does the seat in the Bob’s have? I sat in a Billy Cook from the 90’s yesterday and it was literally like cement! I had no idea saddles were ever made this way with absolutely zero padding. Now I am terrified of buying a similar saddle - the ad on the Bob’s says padded seat, but it doesn’t have that “squishy” look of the some of dedicated trail saddles, which is fine, but I do need some padding! Would that saddle be comfortable for trail riding?

Also, is that grime or mold in the tooling? I have dealt with mold before, but with English saddles it seems a much simpler clean without all the tooling and obviously it must be really embedded to not be cleaned up for the ad. Whatever is in there, is it actually removable with a toothbrush and some elbow grease?

Thank you!

Depends on the model of the Bob’s. It doesn’t appear to have as much padding as some Bob’s I’ve seen, but those are newer.

Its just dirt and grime in the tooling.

I can’t speak for a Bob’s saddle as I’ve never used one. The one in question does appear to have some padding on it though.

Agree that it’s just dirt and grime in the tooling. Actual mold is going to have a green color to it. Nothing that a toothbrush and a good cleaning can’t take care of.

My Bob’s lady reiner has a standard padded seat, but you can order them double padded, without padding or even rough out, as some prefer.

More reining saddles tend to be padded than working cowhorse ones.

If you go to cowdogsaddles.com, you can see all the different models and options.

No telling what that one may be.

It has a serial number also. Contact Bob’s to get the exact details on the saddle.

Thank you. So it looks like there is at least some padding? Is this saddle at all suitable for “active” trail riding - i do more riding around my farm of big fields with plenty of trotting and cantering than long hours on trails.

I’m concerned about the size. The saddle appears to have a 15" tree padded down to be a 14.5" seat. I’m not making any assumptions you OP, but most grown women need a saddle larger than that. Also, the saddle is old and there is a hole in the fender. I might be interested at the list price, but I am not a buyer. I think the saddle is more realistically worth maybe 1k. Best of luck to you in your search.
