I’ve been watching loads of videos of the American pony jumpers and it appears to be so different to the European ones, especially the British pony jumpers.
In the US, most pony jumpers are 14.2hh/148cm (I think??) but in the UK there are three sections, 12.2’s, 13.2’s and 14.2’s with the first and last being the most important. Pony showjumping is a huge thing in the UK, we have lots and lots of shows that are just juniors and even have a junior team that we send each year to jump in the Europeans. So there are so many options you have when it comes to jumping ponies but the top ponies and top riders for each section would be jumping classes of:
12.2hh - 1.15/1.20m
13.2hh - 1.25/1.30m
14.2hh - 1.35/1.45 with some fences of 1.50m
What are our heights like in comparison to the ones in the US?
Are pony jumpers a big thing?
We have Working Hunters, which is a bit like your Hunter classes but I think it’s not quite the same.
Do you have a pony jumping team?
Are ponies typically expensive? The best 14.2hh ponies in the country are almost the same as top horses. They can go from 20k to 200k but that’s very very rare.
What are the age limits for each rider for each pony height if you have any?
Ours are:
12.2hh - until the year you are 12
13.2hh - until the year you are 14
14.2hh - until the year you are 16
I’m very unlucky, I have such a bad birthday for riding (December) so the whole year I rode 12.2’s I was 11 competing against 12 year olds who had a year extra experience.
I saw on here and on facebook some super cool pictures and news articles on the Pony Finals, is this a huge thing? Is it hunters or jumpers or both or more? Is it just one class or a few days/weeks?
So I think that’s most of my questions out of the way. Please do link me to places with some information on it, it’s so different (I think) and I would love to read about it! Thanks
Pony jumpers are not a big thing in North America. Most ponies show in the hunters and it’s generally those who don’t go like a hunter who become pony jumpers (therefore the pony hunters are generally worth much more than the pony jumpers). The ponies at the top of their respective height category in the pony hunters are also in more demand since they will make the striding more easily, so a pony jumper could also be one that simply couldn’t make the hunter striding as easily.
Heights are usually around 3’, going up to 1.0m or 1.10m only at certain shows where there’s more demand. There isn’t anywhere near enough demand to split the division into height categories.
Most riders in North America will move to a horse if they want to try the jumpers.
I think it’s impressive what the ponies jump over in Europe but our industry over here is just so much more focused on the hunters when it comes to ponies (in which the smalls jump 2’3", the mediums jump 2’6" and the larges jump 2’9"/3’), so the mentality towards what ponies could be capable of jump height-wise is very different.
