Questions about freezing semen indefinitely?

My dream stallion is getting gelded next week. He has no offspring and they aren’t planning on collecting anything from him. I have nothing to breed him to right now, nor the budget to be able to for at least 8 months.

If I were to ask them to freeze semen for me, how does this work? What are the general costs of that? They are in another state as well if that matters.

Does this lead to additional fees when I have a mare to breed to? How long can it stay frozen? Should I ask for multiple doses?

They would have to take him to a facility that would have the ability to collect and freeze and evaluate his semen. Not all stallions freeze, so that would be a gamble–and if he does freeze, it will last (with proper care) indefinitely. I would consult with the owner to see if that is something they would want to do and go from there.

To add to what Megaladon stated, approximately 30% of all stallions that are frozen will never produce a pregnancy…even if they are producing pregnancies via live cover or fresh shipped semen. This means that you could go through the process of getting the stallion frozen, paying storage fees on the semen, breeding fees on the mare(s), only to discover that you have wasted your money and have no pregnancies to show for it. If the stallion has no offspring, I assume he has never been collected before. As a result, you would also have to add on the expense of getting him trained for collection before being able to do any freezing.
