Quick bit question on eggbutt snaffles

The new project horse is coming in on trial this Friday (hopefully just in time for Xmas!) and I’m realizing I don’t really have a nice soft baby bit in my collection. I have a coming 4yo arriving on trial and want a soft jointed snaffle. I tried her in a loose ring snaffle with an oval joint and she went well in that. Since loose rings won’t work in the hunter ring, are eggbutts legal or should I just skip right over to a D ring bit?

What do you think of this one?

eggbutts are perfectly “legal” for the hunter ring, just maybe not in “fashion”.

Personally - this is my favorite bit for starting babies (curved mouth piece and oval link conform well to many mouths):

Loose rings and egg butts are not illegal, just not in fashion. Personally I think egg butts are particularly ugly.

No rules against using a loose ring in the hunters. If she goes well in it then use it. If you are so worried about fitting in then maybe save the D-ring for the show ring or use it all the time.

I like eggbutts. I think they are a much tidier looking bit then a D ring. I start all of my babies in them and usually show in them as well.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. I won’t be showing on the rated circuit so I’m not too worried about the eggbutt being in fashion, but I don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb either!

I read the reviews on this bit and I think this really fits what I’m looking for, something soft that will conform to a lot of mouths and be a good starter bit.

Thanks all!

We start all ours in double jointed happy mouth snaffles.

I personally prefer the feel of a D over an egg butt, loose ring or full cheek but I think its a personal choice. None are banned from the hunters.
