Does anyone know what happened with Quip in the Preakness? They said he was pulled up. Then I saw he finished something like 43 lengths back.
I’m glad Justify won but most importantly I never want to see one get injured.
From Paulick Report (I was worried about him, too)
“Quip did appear to have been eased in the stretch, finishing 33 1/4 lengths behind the next-closest rival. Trainer Rodolphe Brisset did indicate that the colt, also owned by the winning connections of Justify, appeared to have exited the Preakness in good order.”
BH article said that Quip just quit but appeared to be in good order.
A couple of strides out of the gate Quip did something odd–a trip, but then a funny hop-step in back. Wonder if he does have something that will show up tomorrow.
They said he was “eased” not “pulled up”. There’s a difference. An “eased” horse is badly beaten so allowed to gallop out at his own speed and will finish the race. A horse that is “pulled up” is stopped and is a DNF, often vanned off due to serious injury.
That terminology is is not nit picky as it’s used in recording the horses public race record and there’s a difference between eased and pulled up/DNF. Both bettors and Breeders find that info valuable in evaluating a race horse for their purposes.
Due to the fog, only one camera angle of the start is available and it’s unclear why Quip had those ugly, awkward steps, might have clipped heels, might have tripped. Who knows. The race caller didn’t even know he was eased and no cameras caught it in that fog. But he did finish and walked back to the barn on his own which is a good sign whatever he did to himself is not serious, jockeys will pull up if they think the horse is hurt beyond a few bumps, bruises and/or scrapes.
Some, a lot horses can’t, don’t want to run a lick on a sloppy track. Hard to know for sure until the horse is tried on it. If the horse is just slipping and sliding, going “backwards”, hates all the mud being thrown in its face. A good jock will/should “pull up” ease. Save the horse for another day.
When I would send one of my Jump (steeplechase) horses out for a run on soft turf for the first time. I tell the jock if it not to his liking just pull up. I am sure he can finish the race but why bother to use him up to run and finish in the back of the pack.
If one looks at the results/charts of Jump races they may see a lot of PUs. The vast majority of times it has nothing to do with a possible injury. Just wasn’t the horse’s day
I wondered about Quip — if someone had put money on him, wouldn’t they have a reason to know how he finished?
Findeight, your post makes sense in that respect.
They know how all the horses finished by reading the race chart. For Quip
QUIP bobbled soon after the break, was taken to rate while saving ground, continued inside into the far turn and faltered.
Race comments were “bobbled, st, ins, faltered”
If you’d bet on Quip for the Preakness, knowing what happened wouldn’t change the fact you’re not getting any $$ back (he’d have to have been declared a no-starter and he clearly started the race).
Betting Quip next time, bettors will have the above information available to them plus whatever other research such as work times, etc
As far as we know, did all horses in all races yesterday get home ok? I only saw two races before the Preakness, I didn’t watch the earlier races.
I like Quip. He’s a good horse and I hope he’s OK. Maybe he stepped on himself, yanked a shoe, caught a heel, etc. Not serious but enough to take it out of a horse in conditions like that
Perhaps he just did not like the surface, the extreme mud. I don’t blame him. I wouldn’t want eyes full of mud either.
I expect we will see him later this summer. Brissett is a good guy, really knows his horses (he exercises them)
From the full race card charts on Equibase…
Race 9 (the Gallorette S GIII), Lake Pochatrain was eased and did not finish.
Everyone else at Pimlico appeared to have at least finished their races.
Not all tracks. Fast Munny at Santa Anita race 6 (allowance optional claiming) according to the chart fell near the finish and was vanned off. Haven’t heard an update on Tyler Baze but he was taken off the rest of his mounts and may have ended up going to the hospital. TVG was on site and they reported that Fast Munny suffered a cardiac event and collapsed prior to the finish. More inclined to believe TVG but not sure why the chart says ‘vanned off’… Didn’t find Baze’s names on any mounts yesterday either.
From the BH
Trainer Rodolphe Brisset has similar thoughts for last-place finisher Quip—what he called a “back-road” summer campaign in races like the Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia (G3) derbies.
“We may have learned something from him. He’s a light-framed horse. Maybe (he’s not suited for races close together),” Brisset said. “We know we can have him ready off a layoff. And right now the plan is to race him next year.”
