“When you head to the track for a day at the races, you’re typically handed a race program full of useful information upon entry. In addition to the more basic details like post times and expected odds, the more thorough programs may provide some data about how the horses in question tend to perform in various conditions — a wet track for instance. But nowhere in the analysis do they ever speculate what might happen to your favorite thoroughbred while running through sprinklers. Which is exactly what happened on the final turn at Bathurst Racecourse on an otherwise sunny day in southeast Australia. Approaching the home stretch on the eighth and final race of the day, riders were forced to run their horses straight through multiple blasts of water set off by a malfunctioning sprinkler system. Luckily the horses were able to keep their feet through the man-made storm but the lead horse, Run Bullet Run, appeared to take the brunt of the elements and couldn’t seem to recover. To make matters worse, the racetrack was forced to issue a refund to everyone who didn’t win when Path to Freedom emerged victorious from the complicated race by a nose.”
