Rain gear

I have search old posts but they are old enough the links aren’t working anymore.

What do you use for riding in the rain? Do you prefer bum length or knee length? I only want to buy one so want something I can do barn chores as well as ride in.
If the back of the jacket doesn’t go over the cantle I imagine the rain would soak your saddle seat as well as your pants. I have never had a jacket like this, does the back of the jacket tend to work up over the saddle when posting?
Thanks for your thoughts.

PNW. We know rain.

I have gone through 4 riding raincoats.

Outback “breathable” nylon shell. Ankle length, rolls into its own knapsack dries fast. But blows back off my knee.

Asmar riding coat breathable seam taped knee length. Gorgeous coat but just not long enough to cover my knees. Crazy expensive but got it on big discount during COVID. I think I lost it this summer :frowning: I really liked it. It covered the saddle nicely.

HKM giant ankle length coat. More fall weight. Tried it out yesterday and I think it stays put over my knee! It’s a discontinued model from Equestrian Fashion Outfitters, got a good deal. It doesn’t really cover the saddle as much as I expected.

Last winter I got a Le Mieux knee length waterproof riding parka and it is fantastic except still.diesnt cover my knees.

So I’d say look for ankle length riding specific coats with thigh straps to keep the coat in place over your knee.

I still would put a waterproof quarter sheet over horses butt if it was really wet or cold.

I try not to do barn chores in any of them. A good breathable Goretex dupe jacket has about one hour of very good protection before you start to get humid. If you work in the riding coat, you use up that hour. So I have hip length jackets for mucking stalls.

I once borrowed a kind of neoprene riding skirt similar in concept to a kayak skirt and it was fantastic but really annoying on the ground.

You might look at a Kerrits raincoat. Nice and long with leg straps and a hood when you are not riding.

When you use the leg straps on a long coat does the back of the jacket cover the back of the saddle? I wouldn’t expect to be galloping around in the rain but my arena could handle some trot work. Wondering
how this works?

Oh yes if the coat is very flowy.

This is my most recent purchase.

In any case the coats tend to drift backwards with speed.

This is my first one

I also have

I am 5 foot 5 so all these coats are longer on me than the models which is good.

They all have their own systems for opening up the skirt to cover the saddle or allow for riding. Whether or not you use the leg strap doesn’t seem to impact how well they cover the saddle.

I had the seam sealed version of this in mud brown and am really upset I lost it traveling. The construction is clever but when you got off the horse that front zip out skirt soaked your thighs and it wasn’t quite long enough on me (though longer than the model!) So did not replace though I quite loved it.

scribbler thank you, this is very useful. How warm are the jackets? Debating if I should buy a size big then can layer when cooler.

I do love the look of the Asmar, so pricey…but I do have some birthday money.

How did you find using the the Asmar?

The HKM, Outback and Asmar are all shells. The HKM and Outback can.both go over a parka. The Asmar was slimmer fit and could go over a hoody. The LeMieux is a glorious full parka itself and can go over a hoody or other winter layers

A lot will depend on your own personal boobage situation

  1. The actual seam taped version is out of stock.

  2. It was not long enough to keep my knees dry. Almost but not quite.

  3. The front zip out flap made your legs wet once you dismounted but was great riding

  4. It was really really cute for casual wear off the horse

  5. Asmar runs slim (like many horse brands) and i had to size up for bust

  6. Asmar are local to me, I like to support local,

  7. I got a really good deal on the seam taped coat at a local tack store in 2020

  8. I was devastated I lost it somewhere

I have the Asmar and I find it not very waterproof . . . it is very cute though so I use it for non-horse purposes.

Is that the fully seam taped version? The most expensive one?

I had the fully seam taped one and it was as waterproof as any of my good outdoor gear, that’s to say impervious for an hour in a Vancouver downpour. I stayed clear of the non taped ones because they were only “water resistant.”

I am not sure . . . I bought it in 2016 (I remember because I changed jobs at the same time and recall thinking it would be a cute as a work rain jacket, too) and it was about $300. I just looked on the Asmar site and it looks like they only have one version for $365 so I’m guessing it’s the same style as that.

The one I have is definitely less waterproof than my current gortex rain jacket.

Well that’s actually good to hear because that makes it easy not to buy the expense one.

Voice of experience: Make SURE it covers your knees and the tops of the boots (and that will likely be the first place the waterproofing will fail, allowing rain to drip off the rest of the coat, onto your knees, and INTO your boots).
