Rain scald/fungal infection around eyes- how to treat?

I have a young horse who has recently developed a terrible fungal thing around his eyes - as in along the eyelash area (top and bottom). it looks like Rain Scald/rot.

This horse has lived pretty much his entire live inside 24/7 until a couple of months ago when he came to me. He HATES being inside (box walks/runs - REALLY stresses outeven with a friend right next to him ) so he is turned out all day and night, and is super quiet and settled no matter what the weather.

Since the heavy rain hit in the last week or so, this rain rot has developed. Nowhere else but on his eyeline - and Im at a loss on how to treat it??? Im presuming internally rather than externally as I dont want to put anything on the eye. It does seem to be spreading now also.

He has seen one vet who scratched their head and suggested putting him inside when it rains…um…yeah…not really going to happen!

Anyone had this before?? Any suggestions on how to treat it?

I have a QH mare that has a rain rot like fungus on her face, mostly between her eyes and up to her ears. I wash her face with MicroTek shampoo. Luckily she is an older girl who is used to the abuse of a hose to the face. I am always careful to avoid her ears though. I hope that it will clear up soon, maybe you could try spaying microTek on a sponce and wiping it around the eyes? I guess it will depend on exactly how close it is to the eyes though. Good Luck!

I have a thoroughbred mare that has exactly what you are describing. Its only on the top of her eyelids. When i first noticed them they looked scaley when i wiped them with a warm wash cloth little bitty tuffs of hair and black debri came off. I was told it was rain scald, but i dont know for sure. If you find out whats going on please let me know because i have racked my brain on what it may be etc.I started her on a hair and hoof supplement so i am hoping this will help. Hopefully it’l go away on its on…

With it so close to the eye, I think the only thing you can do is wash it and keep it clean. Wouldn’t add any topicals.

I got a tube of something antibacterial/anti-fungal from the vet for a weird skin issue my horse had below his eye - it was something that can also be used in dog/cat ears, so it was pretty safe around the eye.

Has the vet seen it and taken a skin scraping? If not, that’s what I would do yesterday.

Neck Threadworms will so,drives migrate into the eye. If the eye areas are the only place you see this stuff, if probably isn’t NTW’s. At any rate, I would wNt the vet’s opinion first:)
