Raincoats, what do you use to ride in

I know the waxed cotton looks elegant but it is heavy, and when before you load up to go to a meet, you have to retreive a horse from pasture or stall, I feel it gets hard to maintain.

Does anyone have a source for riding raincoats that will stay with you in the saddle but not feel, and look, like a tent when you are on the ground, and will stand up to chores as well.

While I like my Barbour (not heavy as long as it fits), I have a new favorite raincoat. It’s a Carhartt raincoat. Lovely fit, not too long, zip-off hood…warm, but not too warm for those summer rains. I’m a huge fan!

If it’s cold I have a down jacket underneath it.

Checked their site. All I saw were jackets. I have a mental picture of a longer coat that would secure around your legs, keeping your nether regions dry.

The gekko coats are what I had in mind for form and function, but again, I’ve had that material or similar, and if it is as it was, it is stiff, and in time seems to delaminate or get bubbly.

One of the pseudo-Aussie companies makes one in a very lightweight fabric; it’s shaped like a full mac - leg-straps, big pleat at the back, two-way zipper and snaps, high collar, etc, but it’s also very lightweight and rolls back into itself, and becomes a neat little backpack.

It’s a name like Australian Outback, or one of those.

I wish Mountain Horse would come out with one, as I’m sure it would be perfection in a riding raincoat!

Been hunting since 1971. Have never worn a raincoat while hunting. If it rains, those lovely wool coats do get wet, and my scarlet coat in particular got very heavy, but I’ve always remained comfy.

Now, for ‘other’ riding in the rain/snow, I have one of those Australian oil skin dusters. It has a fleece liner that buttons in as well so it’s useful for snowy days, too.

I’ve been known to hunt in my Barbour. I really don’t find it heavy, but yes, they can be a bit expensive to maintain.

We don’t get a lot of rain here, but sometimes we have a hunting day where you just know you’ll get soaked. We all break out the raincoats then.

For days when the rain surprises us, my heavy frock coat is quite good at shedding rain. I have been soaked in it, but that was a total freak day involving lightning too close for comfort. It took a couple days to dry out. :o

For non-horse activities in the rain, I have an ancient (Christmas 1988) DriZaBone long coat or a newer J.Peterman duster. The JP is too big for me, so it goes all the way to my shoes, which can be really good if I have to go out in our monsoon.

As an aside, Sierra bears watching, every now and then they have nice, inexpensive tweed jackets good for cubhunting/ breakfasts (one I saw just now doesn’t work for me, but one a friend in CO got from them a few years ago is great).

I bought a Harry Hall duster on ebay a couple of years ago. It’s like an Aussie duster but is modern fabrics and not oilskin. I keep it hung in my trailer for rainy days. Although I have found my wool hunt coat to be fine on most days.

Love Sierra - their sales are wonderful - you can afford to buy Carharts by the dozen!

Thanks for the links Equibrit…I am now salivating over a Gekko ‘Katie’ Its the Hussar style riding mac with a full skirt.
