Raising a Colt

It can be normal for them to be a little funky as in sore or tired directly following vaccinations.

If the nasal discharge is thin and clear, I usually don’t get too alarmed.

If your horse reacts to vaccines, consider another injection site. I have a gelding that, true to his dramatic persona, gets a lot of swelling after any vaccination. The vet gives injections into his chest muscle, and he gets swelling between his front legs that subsides after a few days. I call it his “boob” The swelling between his front legs doesn’t bother him at all and he can be exercised/ridden. If it happens on his neck, it really bothers him.

If there is hot and hard swelling, solid colored/yellow thick nasal discharge, and significant lethargy, then I’d consult your vet.

Not at all uncommon for them to feel puny after vaccines. You are, after all, asking for a response from the immune system. Nothing to worry about unless they’re very depressed or very sore.

If you think his reaction is more than “a little” off, consider splitting up the different vaccines next time (assuming you used a combo) or switching brands.

He’s doing better today, breathing normal and I’m not good at taking pulses but I’m fairly certain it’s within range. Im wondering if you were right about him wanting to rest his head before. I dont have thermometer unfortunately to take his pulse but i think im going to invest in one.

A thermometer gets you his temp  You can get the pulse with a stethoscope, or just your fingers. Here are instructions

yeah I meant to say temperature, It’s early for me and im still dragging my feet xD. He does have more energy today though, enough to grow a fit over the stethoscope. He’s not a fan of it, which is weird considering he’s okay with all the grooming tools I use on him.

Maybe he associates a stethoscope with vets doing things to him that he doesn’t like?

I had a pony who would react to vaccinations occasionally. The vet had me give him bute for a couple of days, and that always got him past it. Once he developed a huge lump on his neck–that was kind of scary but resolved itself quickly. He appreciated a warm compress on it along with the bute.

thats possible, my stables has one, ill be working with him on it while grooming him so that he gets used to the feel. I wonder too if maybe it was cold when she touched him as well.

I think thats all my questions for now, if anything else pops up ill be back!
