Rambo Blankets: Wug vs Original vs Original + Leg Arches

Hoping to get some opinions from people who have tried the different types of Rambo blankets offered in a rainsheet.

Are the added features of the Wug or the Original + Leg Arches worth the additional cost?

Horse would be living out 24/7 in Ontario winters, if that makes a difference.

Thank you!

Honestly depends on the horse. I have an 8 year old, 16 hand foundation style paint mare. She lives in Southern Ontario outside year round. I own 1x amigo lite, 1x rhino wug lite, 1x rambo wug mid weight. I switch out the rainsheets so she doesn’t get cold in the fall and since I use them fall and spring. I use the rambo typically come January until early April. I would say my favorite blanket is the rhino wug. It is made of a different material that I find more durable for my horse in group turnout. The amigo is definitely back up worthy but would not hold up for my mare long term

I have a few of the original Rambos and I have two of the Rambos that have the leg arches.

The originals that I have are old. They are about 10 years old if not older. One I purchased used about six years ago and the others I bought new when I was living up north. They have been repaired and they have been washed and they are still kicking. I have one sheet and then I have the navy with red trim (Medium). The rest that I have are heavy weight. They have held up and they are still waterproof after all these years. They don’t shift and they keep the horses warm.

I have one with leg arches but it is in a 100g so light medium and I really love it. I like the triple tummy surcingles and I feel it keeps the blanket in place really well.

That being said, I have a bunch of old Rhino Wugs for rain sheets and I adore them. I love the high rise neck and I think it keeps the rain from getting in. If the horse is out in massive rain with a heavier blanket on I put the rhino over top to keep the ran from running down my horses neck.

I have started buying only high rise necks or full necks due to the cold rain we sometimes get here. My horses are fully clipped and I want them to not stand outside shivering when rain gets down their blankets from the neck. I really like the Wug blankets. I like the clip closure, I like the quality, and I like the triple surcingle. I hate the price though. My girl friend bout heavy, mids, and lights for three of her horses and the total was about 1k per horse for 3 blankets.

Rambo’s with Leg Arches

My personal opinion of the Rambo’s with the leg arches and 3 surcingles is not too great simply because you have to buckle them just about down under the horse and if a horse would go to cow kick with a hind leg you’d probably get kicked. Plus it hurt my back to bend down to buckle them. Otherwise I like the look and fit of them.

Rambo Wugs
I think these are the ones that go about 1/2 way up the neck. Only thing I didn’t like about them was the mess they made of horses manes.

Rambo originals

I think I had 7 of these from the light weights to midweights and heavyweights. Loved them obviously.

I’ve used Amigos and Rhino’s but don’t think they are anywhere nearly as tough as the Rambos.

I agree though with the poster that said it depends on the horse and how they are with turnouts.

What I like the best about the Wug or Original + leg arches is the V front closure. That works really well for my horse.

The wug can fit a bit more snug in the chest and shoulder area so is not always the best fit for a broadly built horse, or one that is thick from chest to wither. My current horses can wear any of the cuts, but had one in the past that the wug just wouldn’t work well on unless I went up a size from his other blankets, and then the back hung so far off his butt, he’d poop all over it…so no wug for him.

The newer versions IMHO are worth the money. I bought a new one last year for my show horse and it is by far my favorite blanket. Will it last like the older versions? Only time will tell.
