Rambo summer series turnout?

I’m trying really hard to accomplish the following this summer:

  1. not have my horse rub his mane and tail out
  2. protect him from flies, which he hates and makes him bronc around the turnout, and
  3. not have him get too hot

At first, he had a Weatherbeeta Airflow fly sheet. This worked well enough at the previous barn. It lost its shape pretty easily, though. It’s way too stretched out in front and even on the tightest hole in the front straps, it slides back on his withers uncomfortably. The tiny piece of velcro in front does nothing to keep flies off his chest. He’s also about to outgrow it at the back end.

The one I have doesn’t have a neck, so at current barn where part of the fencing is pipe fencing and not hot (because no neighbors on those sides), he sticks his head through the fence to try to eat the grass outside the paddock. Not much to eat in his paddock, and he can’t move paddocks with more grass because the hot tape fence that is there isn’t hot enough and he plays over the fence with neighbors. He has very little mane to start with, and it quickly gets rubbed out in large sections on the fence.

Last year, I switched him to a Rambo Protector. By this season, it’s also getting a bit stretched out in front, although the closure is superior to the WB. It also has a nylon lined hood. The hood does not seem to be doing much to protect his mane. I am not sure why, but I take it off and there’s more broken hairs as if he wasn’t wearing it at all. The tail flap is also not lined (WB one is), so it further rubs the top of his tail out which already gets itchy in summer and he rubs it in his stall at night. Like his mane, there’s not a lot of tail to begin with.

It takes most of the winter to grow the hair back out.

Both of the above seem to do fine as far as warmth, though the WB did make him sweat a little more.

I’m thinking of getting him the Rambo summer series turnout for all but the brutally hot days. It’s a fly sheet with a hood and a softshell topline to protect from summer storms (of which we have many in early summer, but horse would often be inside by the time those roll in anyway). The description of the topline makes it sound like it would have a lining that is more similar to his other turnouts, which do not damage his mane and tail. The topline is also said to be a reflective fabric, which sounds like a good idea for reflecting the brutally hot sun (the main source of heat, as humidity is low) that we have and maybe even keeping him cooler. But I’m not sure? I could use the Protector for the super hot days, but it does damage when used every day.

Anyone have one and have any comments on how hot it is?

I didn’t end up buying it but I looked at it. I decided it would be way too hot. My horse is lathered and sweaty sometimes under regular flysheets, I couldn’t put one on him that is partially “turnout sheet.” The best fly sheet I’ve found is the Eous one. I think the model is “dunbar.” Stand up to a lot of abuse, doesn’t stretch out, washes up nicely, comes with belly and neck cover. They run generously in size too, which is helpful (my horse needs an 87).

I can’t for the life of me find that Eous sheet in a relatively normal size. All the ones I’m finding are tiny, like 66. Does it have lining anywhere?

I took the Protector home to wash and put horse in his WB. And I hate it. It just fits so badly in the front now, and he has a fit when I try to adjust it after he rolls. It’s in great shape as far as no holes, so I think I’m going to see if I can sell it to someone who won’t hate it. The Rambo summer series sheet is back ordered till late July in my horse’s size unless I want to get a navy one (I don’t…I already have a navy scrim sheet that I use sparingly because it gets hot in the sun). But, I may try an 84 in the white and see what it feels like in person, since a relatively local company offered to give me free return shipping due to the back ordered status of horse’s regular size. It might actually be pretty comfy for the weather we have had lately. I mean, it snowed again last week . If it fails, I may just go with an Amigo, which seems to be softer than the Protector and has tail lining.

Ok, I got this sheet, and wow. It’s really nice! It’s also perfect for the weather we have been having, which is not exactly “summer.” The horses go out in the AM when it’s still in the 40s. And they may or may not get rained on before they come in. With some bits of hot sun in between.

The underside of the softshell parts along the back is the mesh. The mesh is much softer than the other Rambos. So, I’d say the softshell parts are kind of like the really nice show jackets with the mesh linings. The tail flap is the best part and should not rub his tail any more bald than it is. The neck is actually long enough for him rather than a mock neck. And the 84" fit just fine . It could actually stand to have some more belly coverage. But the entire length of the surcingles are elasticized, so I think you can give it a snugger fit without it being too constrictive.

I think even with the softshell strip, it will be cooler than the Weatherbeeta Airflow. It may not be the right choice in August, but it’s good right now.

It also comes with a 100g liner that fits just of the back, which I don’t know if I’d use right now, but it would be possibly useful if he had to be out overnight.

Are you still liking this sheet??

Yes, I am. I didn’t use it on the very hot days, and I haven’t used the liner. It got cold over the weekend, but we just switched to full rain sheets.

The chest doesn’t stay closed as well as the other Rambos because the velcro system is different, but overall it’s been a nice sheet to have on hand.
