Ranch pleasure and cross entry at show

For the last 12 years, I have only shown dressage, hunters and jumpers with my TBs. I am going to my first fun/schooling type open show in many years with my new Quarter horse. Mostly just to get him out to see what he thinks ( I have had him for 2 months, he had not been ridden for last 2 years per previous owner). If all goes well, I want to ride him in the hunter under saddle class, since that is what I am used to, and I want to take him in the Ranch pleasure since that just looks like fun. I also want to use my recently purchased western saddle.

I have read in the AQHA handbook that a western pleasure horse cannot cross enter into the ranch pleasure at the same show. So what about hunter? Is it legal to ride both hunter under saddle and ranch pleasure at the same show? This show is just for fun and to get out after a long winter. Not planning on any grand performance in either division/class. I have asked around and no one really knows but I have heard that one person does both. I know I can call AQHA and ask but thought I would come here first and then call aqha tomorrow if needed.

I am pretty sure you can ride HUS and Ranch Pleasure. WP is the only one-or-the-other restriction.

You can cross enter from HUS. Your only potential issue is the braiding/banding that you might have done for HUS. No braids/bands for RHP…some roach the mane, I opted to simply grow my horses mane out, but I don’t do HUS or EQ, just trail/WR. Good luck. I haven’t shown in RHP before either, but thought the class looked fun, and my horse is pretty handy, so thinking she will enjoy it too.

Thanks! Good to know that I can do both. My friend is a regular at AQHA shows and is going to help me with the mane problem. Hoping we can find a happy medium that works for both divisions!

This is the first year for Ranch Pleasure to be approved for Amateur and Select Amateur. As a newly approved class, it will probably only require two points to qualify for the Amateur or Select Amateur World Show. So if you always dreamed of qualifying for an AQHA World Show, this is your opportunity. Will be a large class, but fun. There were 60 in the open World Show last year, first year for that with two points needed t o qualify.
