When you show in ranch riding are you supposed to post at the trot? TIA
You can do either, best I know, just watched several doing pattern 3 and they did both.
Whatever is most comfortable for you…you are out for hours on a ranch, you do what works.
You can stand or post (or sit, I guess, though no one really does). Personally, I think standing looks silly and not at all practical for long-duration riding. But no one asked me before writing the rules.
You can post or “stand” for the extended trot. Either is acceptable and both have won in the show ring. Personally, I like to post because I think that is more realistic. If you were trotting around checking cattle, it’d get pretty uncomfortable to be "standing " in the saddle while you cover 100 acres or more.
For the jog or sitting trot, of course, you sit for that.
I was taught to sit the trot but post or stand in the extended trot in ranch riding classes. But I don’t show AQHA just local/regional ranch horse shows.
I’ve worked with some guys from AZ and they stand at the trot, yes, it is practical outside. It’s a regional thing I suppose.
I don’t ride English so I truly don’t know, but what would be the difference between standing at the trot and a two point position?
Not too much at first glance but much in the rider core strength and balance department. It’s a whole lot easier to just stand in a Western saddle without worrying if your hip angle is correct and the weight properly down into your heel. You just stand and relax and there’s a handle if you need to grab it in a sudden spook or stumble in rough terrain.
Thank you findeight.
