Ranch sorting

Yesterday, I attended my first sorting/penning event and what an amazing group of horsemen - humble, chill, energetic…just cool people - and I think I would like to try this!

My mom was a team penner, but she passed away 13 years ago (heart attack, while working cows) and I was never able to see her perform. I think I understand why she loved it so much!

I have a 13 year old Saddlebred - he’s done everything from beach camping, mountain riding, extreme trail challenges, Civil War reenactments, career days at school, saddle seat, hunter/jumper - just an all around “Jack-of-all-trades, master of none” horse.

He’s been exposed to cows when he lived on an Angus ranch in OK, but it’s been years.

Is this something we can just do for fun on our own, or should I seek the advice of a professional trainer?

I’m just wanting to do this for fun - I have no delusional visions that my ASB will be a World Champion ranch horse lol

Ask the club you were with yesterday.
They will tell you where to go practice and learn more.

Any horse can do that, you help the horse work the cattle.
You are judged by time and faults, not on how cowy and strong the horse works, like in cutting.

Most that try sorting and penning in all their forms have a ball with it.
Warning, it is addictive.
