Ranitidine Question

I have a three year old OTTB who came off the track earlier this year that has been displaying signs of ulcers (sensitive on his sides when grooming, and uncomfortable and mad about leg while being ridden). I have had him on 3000 mg of powdered ranitidine three times a day since Sunday (prior to that he was on 1500 mg two to three times a day for about 6 days). The plan was to see if the ranitidine improved things, then put him on omeprozale to cure the ulcers. I realized I was not giving him enough ranitidine at first but now he has been on it three times a day since Sunday and it has not helped as I rode him today and he was the worst he’s ever been. I’m wondering if anyone here has any experience with the powdered ranitidine versus the liquid and if you think one is better than the other? Also, if you think he’s been on it long enough to see a difference or if I need to give it more time?

I never had much luck with ranitidine… I would try ulcerguard and see if that helps.

The equine dose is 3mg/lb. So 3000mg for a 1000 lb horse, twice or three times a day.

Not surprised you’re not seeing a response–your dose is too low by a factor of ten.

Yep, not sure how you came up with that dosage, but that’s a spit in the bucket for a horse.

The form doesn’t matter. But you do need the 3mg/lb dose, minimally every 12 hours, but ideally every 8 hours for what you are looking to accomplish, which is to see if it helps.

Ranitidine, at the proper dose, reduces acid production for about 8 hours, which is why the every 8 hour dosing is best.

Sorry, that was my mistake. He is on 3,000mg a day, not 300 as I originally wrote.

I have used ranitidine for a ulcery horse can’t say it really made much difference. Said horse was on it for a good 30 days.

I used ranitidine with no change.
Saw positive results quickly with Abler’s version of ulcer guard.

I’ll toss a positive result in: I see good results with ranitidine frequently. It works more quickly than omeprazole to reduce the acid level in the stomach.

That said, I just use nexium now, because it’s cheaper and easier

Thirty days of ranitidine got rid of my horses Grade I ulcers, as documented by scoping before and after. We dosed three times a day.
