Raspberry leaves for a pregnant mare: contraindicated?

My mare (33 days in foal) has received a maintenence dose of Raspberry leaves for several years now–one scoop a day.

Should I discontinue them through her pregnancy?

Yes. I did some research into this before breeding one of my mares and, IIRC, there were some concerns about feeding the leaves in pregnancy. So I decided better safe than sorry.

I doubt that it will cause any problems

‘1 scoop’ which, I am assuming, is around 1- 2oz, will not contain enough of anything to cause a problem.

However if your ‘1 scoop’ is nearer 1 lb then it might different.

It’s all in the amounts fed.

Actually I’ve alway heard that it is good to feed prior to & while trying to get a mare in foal as it helps the uterus. Again also feed one month prior to foaling and then after foaling.

Not fed at any other time and when feeding only a handfull once per day. Also not made into a tea just fed as straight leaves.

I fed them to my mare before, during, and after pregnancy. Never had any issues but was feeding in ounces at a maintenance level. I upped them for her in her last month.

But I am not a vet nor an herbalist. So don’t take what I say for gospel.

I feed them the last three months of pregnancy as it is supposed to help with uterine tone. Not sure if it’s a problem in early pregnancy or not. I would be inclined to continue if she has been on it the whole time however.

Thanks, all–no consensus, I guess!

I just made up a week’s worth of supplement baggies for her, and left the raspberry leaves out this time (she only gets 1 ounce per day.) It’s not like they make a big difference in her attitude U/S (she is not hormonal and bitchy, just overreactive and spooky), and since she’s not getting ridden, what the heck, right?

It is not required Dr. Doolittle……you can continue the dosage of Rasberry Leaves…but in correct amount….
We all know…Raspberry leaf is a natural, herbal remedy for moodiness in mares caused by fluctuations in hormone levels. It is also believed to improve muscle tone in the gastrointestinal tract and the uterus. Raspberry leaf can be found in prepared supplements or it can be given in dried leaf form.
Calculating Dosage of Raspberry Leaves
When starting a horse on raspberry leaves it is important to calculate the correct amount of the dried leaves to add to feed. Dosage for the leaves can be calculated according to weight, with 1/2 a teaspoon being the recommended dosage for every 150 pounds the animal weighs.
Frequency and Duration
One dose of raspberry leaf daily is the maximum required for any horse. While some of the supplements may be safe to feed year round, pure raspberry leaves should not be fed year round.
Supplements
Supplements with raspberry leaves for horses are available from several companies and typically come with scoops to measure out the recommended dosage. Horse owners should consult the dosages instructions for these products to ensure correct dosage.
