Raspberry leaves.

I feed raspberry leaves to my open mares to help them get ready for breeding season. I also start giving it to them just before they foal. It works Really well and I have never had a problem with retained placentas Etc. My problem is that I can’t remember how long before thay are due to start it up again. I hear that if it is fed too early it may cause them to abort! Does anyone remember?

Hey, somebody must know about this. I found out about using Raspberry leaves on this forum many years ago.

I don’t know the answer. But I have been feeding Mare Magic raspberry leaves to my pregnant mare and my gelding all along. It is something my hunter trainer has us do, she feels it helps calm them.

My mare is due in 2 months. On advice of my midwife, I drank tons of raspberry tea during my last pregnancy and had a 2 hour labor.

So I thought it was a good idea to feed it to my horse. Yikes, this can make them abort?

I was told not to give it to the mares once they were pregnant until the last week–weeks Can’t remember. You seem to be doing fine. That is a relief! I do know that their deliveries were quick and uncomplicated.

i start giving it to my mares about 6 weeks before foaling, you have to give it time to work

i also leave the mares on it right up til t hey are 30 days in foal again

I have 4 mares, I tried it on them last year for the “calming affect” and it didn’t do anything. :frowning:

Here’s a thread that may help you:

I buy the Mare Magic through Smartpak

In humans Red Raspberry Leaf Tea is traditionally used to tone and strengthen the uterus and to help allieviate some nutritional deficiencies

I would guess it could have the same effect in horses. I drank it during both of my pregnancies but had forgotten about it until I saw this thread…I will likely try it on my horses this year!

You can buy them in bulk and save a bunch - I bought them through an herb supplier rather than the stuff packaged for horses, but I can’t recall the name. I think someone here suggested the place.

I had my girl on them for the calming effect prior to breeding and kept her on them all the way through foaling. The vet commented that it was one of the healthiest/clean placentas he had seen. Just one data point. I get mine through Monterey Bay Spice Company: http://www.herbco.com

FWIW I also buy a lot of spices, teas and such through them for myself. Great prices and service and their chocolate chi is to die for!!!
