Rates for frozen semen storage

I recently purchased my first dose of frozen from an incredible stallion that I do not plan to use in the next season or two.

Just got off the phone with two recommended storage agents who quoted $200/yr and $340/yr for up to 200 straws.

While I’m happy to pay to keep this, are there more economical alternatives for those of us with one or only a few doses? Do some of you share with others?

Many thanks.

Please PM if necessary.

To own a tank (anywhere between 400-900 and then nitrogen costs of at least $25/fill bare minimum, $200/year isn’t really bad.

I paid $20/month when I kept it at my vets place and $50/quarter when it was at a dedicated semen storage facility.

I would not recommend you share costs and have your semen stored under someone else’s name. That could very well give them access to your goods. And there have been cases where semen went missing.

$200 seems reasonable. Did you call Select Breeders? I thought I paid $75 a quarter…so that would be similar to what you are priced.

I do have my own tank now but doubt I would want to keep it long term.

In Europe 200$ is on the medium/high side (Linalux is 10€/month)

Find a place that stores bull semen and ask them. Same tanks, same temps but a lot more reasonable.

We store ours at Rood and Riddle in Lexington. You might call and get a quote.

I use a place that mainly does bull semen and pay $50/quarter for my measly one dose. Am probably going to use it or try to sell it this year because the fee is ridiculous.

I use www.bovine-elite.com. They charge .03 per straw per month for semen storage with a $10 per month minimum. But even with one dose that is just $120 per year

Thanks for the suggestions. Actually Bovine Elite was my $200/year quote for < 200 straws . I have made many more inquiries and found them to be highly regarded by many repro vets.

While there is a temptation to share tanks, not worth the risk.

Would anyone recommend any books/further reading on the logistics of frozen? It opens up a new world. Frankly after experiencing all the stallion owner collection dates, late night missed express airport transfers and transport, this has to be less hassle.

They quoted me $50 a quarter last week (minimum). So also $200/year.

They quoted me $50.00/quarter for 200 straws or less. ($200/yr) which was the best rate I found. I called two repro vets who said Bovine Elite are reputable and easy to work with, as well as Select Breeders and others.

Hmmmm, their website says .03 per straw with $10 per month minimum and they haven’t raised my price yet.

Apparently a few years ago, Bovine Elite “wised up” and started charging new equine clients at a higher rate than the bovine clients. They may not have changed the pricing for clients who got on board before they realized that they could get away with charging higher fess to equine clients, but they do now have separate fee structures. Their storage fees are still at the lower end for equine storage AND their tank prep and shipping fees were lower than all the equine facilities I checked so they are still a relatively good deal.

My local vet has a tank and offers a lower fee, but that is just for local clients who are actively breeding. Her clinic is not set up for shipping doses out; this is just a service for clients who use frozen for their own mares.
