Rather than tagging onto the TC thread - Split Samples for Charlatan and Gamine in Arkansas are Positive

$1,500. He can probably find that under his couch cushions.

The larger impact might be the trainer, jockey and owner’s share of the $120,000 prize money. While that may still be chump change for the parties involved, it is probably more the piggy bank kind and not the couch cushion kind.

To me what is sad is this is now Gamine’s second DQ, neither of her own doing. We also don’t really know how good she is since she apparently hasn’t run clean.

BB is accepting this ruling from KY but is still appealing the Arkansas decision after the finding from a 5/2 allowance optional claiming win at Oaklawn Park.

This may cause some owners, potential clients of Baffert’s, to re-think and choose a different trainer.
Some may think Baffert is worth the gamble and some may not.

The trainer is not the only one affected. The owner of the horse in question has lost the purse money as well their filly’s distinction of being 3rd in a very prestigious grade 1 race. There are many possible repercussions for the owners of this filly, including the possible devaluation of her future offspring.

If I was the owner of the filly (assuming that I wasn’t complicit in the “contamination”) I would be livid with Baffert. There is no excuse for the number of mistakes, made under his management, that have caused many horses to be in violation of the drug rules, and I think the days of him getting a pass are gone.

Most trainers can, and do, run horses that pass the drug tests.

This yes. If I was an owner of a promising, ie G1 possibilities, I’d be thinking twice about BB despite his record of delivering on the top 3YO G1 races each year.

Seemed like as good a place as any

Color me surprised. Charlatan sent back to Margaux Farm for unspecified setback. A re-evaluation to be done next month.

Think we’ll see him on the track again, ever? I don’t.

I must have missed the retirement announcement in June

Charlatan will be $50,000 live foal stands and nurses at Hill’n’Dale at Xalapa.
