Just out of curiosity, how much do the older ones usually sell for? And are they all older and under saddle, or do they sell babies too?

The catalog is not available to the public this year (you have to pay $10 - which is pretty short sighted, in my view, but that is a side issue), but typically there are horses of all ages, including horses that have been started. They will also sell broodmares who no longer fit their program. IIRC, the stallion Sir Wanabi (http://www.laprisestable.com/stallion.html) was sold as a yearling for a considerable sum of money in 2003. His dam also went through the sale that year, and was carrying a full sibling if I recall correctly. I believe she later slipped the foal, however. There were a few other broodmares that year, in addition to some riding horses and other youngsters. I recall that there were two REALLY nice mares - I think both were dark but very clearly would have been too much horse for the program.
Unless things have changed, you have the opportunity to view the horses in the sale horses in the week leading up to the sale and can also arrange to view the xrays.
The prices are not low… you are paying for the quality of the horses.
From what I recall in previous years I would say most prices were in the mid teens, with not too many below that… (someone please correct me if you have any input!)
I believe some of the high sellers in previous years were in the 30k-40k range.
Actually, the RCMP have quite an impressive breeding program using horses of Dressage bloodlines. The RCMP use Hanoverian bloodlines and will cross with some Thoroughbred as needed. They like the Hanoverian temperament, physique, and abilities.
To be “culled” from the RCMP breeding program doesn’t mean they were sent away because of conformation faults or breeding quality. These are still good quality horses. Most of the sale is to sell off surplus young stock. They only need a specific number of horses for parades, Royal escorts, large crowds, traffic work and the Musical Ride.
They breed very specific things in their horses - namely calm temperament, stable mentality, conformation, Dressage abilities, and minimum height/size criteria. And finally they must be black. They will accept some white on the face and some white feet.
If they state a broodmare is a capable and good broodmare, then she is. A buyer could ask specific questions as to the quality of her foals and they will tell you.
A young mare or black gelding (riding horse) in the sale is one that they decided would not make a good enough police horse, but would still make a good show horse. Geldings and fillies that are not black are automatic culls for the sale irregardless of physique and abilities. Some of their “culled” mares/fillies would still make very good (dressage-based) broodmares of very good pedigree.
I spent some time talking to an officer of the Musical Ride at Spruce Meadows. Every couple years, the Musical Ride horse has to endure “training” another new rider. This takes a special horse in of itself. Most of these people have never ridden a horse before being admitted to the Musical Ride tour. The horses in their Musical program have good basic 3 gaits, but nothing hugely flashy that an inexperienced rider couldn’t sit (as others mentioned). The MR recruit undergoes intensive riding training for a year before they’re let loose to travel with the Musical Ride.
It should be noted that there are still police officers who routinely have a horse they use for crowd control, riot control, etc., and who are assigned escort duties when members of the Royal Family visit - these are much better riders. (I have 3 family members in the RCMP…)
The only time I have been intimidated by a horse “on site” was a crowd control mounted police in Toronto. He was a big black horse in full riot gear. He had the same expression as his rider “Do not come near me”. Made me think of my WB and what their ancestors were doing 2-3 hundred years ago. A war horse was probably very overwhelming in battle. Glad they have chilled out a bit.
It’s tonight!!!
Can you keep us updated on the prices? I cannot find previous auction results anywhere. I seem to recall at $37K price one year. Definitely nice horses and nice prices.
I’m going to be taking pictures and notes. Will try to get most of the pics to facebook by tomorrow morning.

Thank you Shawnda N for all of your hard work!!! Seems like prices were calmer than in previous years.
No pics, and someone already beat me to the prices. I crashed when I got home, forgot how long that drive is…
Now that the prices are out I have a question. Why were the prices so much lower than previous years??
Me? I only want to see pictures Particularly of the Sir Wanabi top seller !!!

If you watch Sir Wanabi’s Facebook page, I think Sandra will post a video of the top selling colt from last evening’s auction, a very lovely 4 year gelding.

Unfortunately the “fine print” prohibits RCMP members and their immediate families from participating in the auction.
I was successful with fresh, some years ago, in Germany. The mare had had a terrible distocia, and required extensive post-treatment after the dead foal was removed. However, she was bred successfully, 1st attempt, about 50 days post-foaling. She was 12 at the time.
