RCMP Auction. Anyone going?

I know there are a few Ottawa area people hanging around on this board.

I’m very excited for it (though I’m only going to spectate), there’s a demonstration by Jill Henslewood and Eclipsed by Color (formerly Color Guard, the reserve champion at the stallion testing last year).

So… who’s going???

Would love to go see the facility sometime but won’t be this year! ( other side of world). Are most of them warmbloods or warmblood cross?

P.

I will be attending with a few friends.
Waves at Jessica !!!

Polydor,
I won’t attend either, but in answer to your question, all or almost all are warmbloods. The RCMP has imported a number of well-bred Hanoverian mares over the past 10 or more years, and they stand their own licensed Hanoverian stallion. All black - as they breed for colour, for the RCMP Musical Ride. Offspring which have too much white, or are chestnut/bay, are sold at semi-annual auction.
The RCMP also uses frozen semen in its program.
They have bred some very good horses recently - Look at stallions Eclipsed by Colour and Sir Wanabi as 2 very good examples.

Ah cool stuff! Thanks for the info Sunnydays! I have seen them in action quite a few times but couldn’t remember their breeding program at all.

My horse’s dam was an RCMP auction mare. She was solid black, probably a cull? But she was very nice, competed to 3rd level before a pasture injury and then was retired to broodmare status. She has mostly Hanoverian lines, Matcho AA, Goldstein, Pik Koenig and her TB damline went back to Man o’ War. She is currently 21 years old and still going strong. I know a lot of people say their auction horses are culls and to beware, but she is a very nice horse and I don’t think was auctioned because of any negatives.

She was presented to ISR/Oldenburg and is a Star mare, and has had some very nice offspring including a full brother to my guy who is doing 4th level and has spectacular gaits!

Their definition of a cull is pretty specific though. They have to put up with all sorts of shenanigans and sometimes, they just don’t have the gaits to match the rest of the group!

One person’s cull is another man’s champion in this case.

I will likely just spectate this year…I always get outbid anyhow!
10yrs ago they went for more reasonable prices…LOL…very nice horses though

I heard that if they are TOO good of a mover (as in lofty and expressive gaits) they get put in the auction. Remember that they want horses that can perform the RCMP Musical Ride and alot of the mounties are not experienced horsemen and simply cannot sit a trot that is too huge. They do alot of patterns and all the horses need to move somewhat the same.

I’m very excited to go this year. It’s the first one I will have been to  I’ve booked the time off, got the day planned, all excited! But I can’t find anyone to go with me :frowning:

Yeah I will be there Shawnda!! I am trying hard to bring Max with me

Yes, there is cull and cull… they don’t usually go for cheap. But then they are beautiful, mostly trained horses! I am too far from Ottawa to go, but who knows, maybe in 2 years!

THIS…
I have a number of friends on the ride right now… and they need horses that are simply an easy ride.
There are some really fantastic horses coming out of that program… there is a little bit of TB blood in there but they are using all Hanoverians now.

The riders are rotated through every 3 (or is it 4) years. They are RCMP (police) and not professional riders. Some may not have even ridden much before the program. They need patient packers. I bet the culls are more suited to sport than the ones they keep. Great deal, really.
How cool is it that our cops breed WB’s?

Wasn’t Colour Guard an RCMP “cull”? Obviously he is a chestnut, but still…not too shappy

He was the highest selling horse at their auction

Chestnut and blingy to boot! I had the pleasure of working with him shortly when he was younger and he was an absolute pleasure. So lovely to handle and just a nice nice horse all round. RCMP did good!
