I am going! We purchased a mare in foal to the RCMP stallion, Dubai at the last auction, whose son is now a long yearling. As we are not in need of any more mares, I’m hoping we will be able to sit on our hands this year. Some pretty tempting offerings, though!
Tradewind, can you get back to me with the price that the broodie Ellen (ELITE JBP Hanoverian) and Lot 21, the two yr old El Bundy filly Illusion sell for? I love both of them but am in a contracting phase, rather than an expanding phase, just now.

Sure, Diane. I also love Ellen, she’s such a lovely mare! We are also supposed to be downsizing at the moment (or at least not increasing our numbers), so I will have to resist the temptation to bring her home. Her 2013 filly being sold in the auction also is stunning. I spoke to John Phillips, the breeding manager at the RCMP farm, at the Canadian Hanoverian inspection at South Lane Farm a few weeks ago and he said he thinks she is the nicest filly they have ever offered for sale!
So, we said we wouldn’t, but we did. Somehow came home with a 19 year old broodmare. The prices were surprisingly low. A few went for good prices but there were lots of deals to be had. Here is the list of what they all went for:
Issac (Dubai/Santorini) - 2 yrs - $13,000
Juniper (Dubai/Earl) - 1 yr - $6500
Kassel (Gaucho/Leibniz) - 21 yrs - $6200
Jackie (High Spirits/Feiner Stern) - 1 yr - $3900
Freia (Federalist/Matcho AA) - 14 yrs, in foal to Dubai - $6100
Irene (Dubai/Golden Jubilee(mare given to RCMP by the Queen)) - $7900
De-Angie (Don Frederico/Matcho AA) - 9 yrs - $6300
Friend (Dubai/Weinstein) - 5 yrs - $8500
Igloo (Earl/Feiner Stern) - 2 yrs - $4300
Irwin (Dubai/Lincoln) - 2 yrs - $5000
Ronja (Royal Diamond/Bormio xx) - 15 yrs, in foal to Dubai - $4500
Fred (Lanthan/Grandero) - 5 yrs - $11,500
Judge (High Spirits/Espri) - 1 yr - $9000
Ellen (Earl/Weltruhm) - 6 years, in foal to Dubai - $17,000
Katy (Dubai/Earl) - 4 months - $7300
Buckley (Santorini/Salvano) - 9 yrs - $11,000
Fontana (Feiner Stern/Erbherzog) - 19 yrs, in foal to Bugatti - $2500
Isabella (Bonifatius/Desperados) - 2 yrs - $10,100
Desirade (Desperados/Wolkentanz I) - 6 yrs, in foal to Bugatti - $18,500
Africa (Santorini/Wenzel I) - 10 yrs - $13,300
Illusion (El Bundy/First Pleasure) - 2 yrs - $33,500

I don’t think it was the Queen’s horse that sold but rather the offspring. Likely didn’t throw black.
I can’t believe the price on the 21 year musical rider veteran horse. To me that seems kind of high.

Yes, we did buy Fontana, thank you! She is in foal to Bugatti so I am looking forward to that foal. We also have a Federweisser mare we purchased at the previous auction who is in foal to Sir Wanabi, so hopefully we will have a few nice black foals next year. The highest selling horse ever was Colour Guard (aka Eclipsed by Colour) who sold for $42,000 two auctions ago. Prices haven’t been so high for the last few auctions.
I absolutely loved Ellen and her filly, Katy; I’m surprised Katy didn’t go for more. Illusion didn’t really do it for me as I’m not a hunter rider/breeder; she was purchased as a hunter prospect for a teenage girl. Very nice hunter prospect with great bloodlines. Desirade, the Desperados mare, and her daughter, Isabella were more my style. Both of those were incredibly nice dressage type mares that went to big name local dressage riders/coaches, so it will be nice to see what they go on to do in a few years.

That’s right, the mare seems to have thrown mostly chestnuts which obviously can’t be used in the ride. Another chestnut filly out of that mare was sold in the last auction.
I also thought the price for Kassel was on the high side, but there is a novelty factor to owning an ex-ride horse, plus that particular horse has been on ten Musical Rides and has spent the last few years as a school horse for the riders so it would be hard to imagine a more solid schoolmaster. He was purchased by a woman in her 70s who had tried him the day before (while we were there viewing the horses as well) and really wanted him, so it was a nice story. I’m sure she felt he was well worth the money.
Someone on EMG did not think the horses were that nice except for the filly and Fontana!
Wow, great for Kassel’s new owner!! solid, solid horse for a bargain! I really don’t think it is a high price for that well trained horse! When I think I paid $7000 for my clyde x mare 13 years ago and she has no pedigree. She could jump the moon, but still… prices sure have come down!!
