This is an after-post for the King Charles Cavalier who had 1.5 quarts of fluid taken out of her a month ago. The little girl continues to do great-better than great-eating well, trotting around the block 2x day, regular poops, great appetite-but I have been noticing that now and then in the AM when I wake up her belly is really wet. I smell it, even tasted it-doesn’t smell or taste like urine and when I take her out to pee she has a very lonnnnngggg pee. Google searches not coming up with anything. From the measurements I’m taking, she doesn’t seem to be retaining fluid after the initial draw, so great job VET on catching the wave and upping the heart meds at the right time. Will bring in this week for another blood draw and will ask then, meantime, wondering if any of you have any experience with this?
I was trying to remember the COTH member who raises them. Someone bumped up an old thread on another forum and her name was in there -----> Sonesta
She might be able to give you some insight.
Fluid can’t leak through the abdominal wall, no. But if the hole that was created when they tapped her belly didn’t heal, fluid could be leaking through that. How did the vet close the needle hole? There’s a lot of literature out there in preventing leaks after paracentesis in people. Apparently you can’t just assume the body will heal that trauma.

No experience with that, but my cavalier in CHF takes her lasix twice a day so pees a lot and also drinks a lot so her output is very dilute and clear. She has been using peepads at night when she cannot hold it and I am sleeping. She doesn’t beg during the night for some reason or I don’t hear her <I am a sound sleeper> Yours may be sleeping and peeing, they can suffer incontinence when they are older and fast asleep and just pee while sleeping. My one who died last year did that and she never smelled.
Ask the vet is all I can say. Glad she is doing well. The meds have mine acting so well it’s amazing for now! [h=1][/h]
Yep, crazy, I think this is what it is. I think she just pees without probably even knowing that is what she is doing. It happened the other morning and I could smell it more like urine this time. Now, whenever I get up at night, I’m taking her out, and she always has to pee. We have a trip to the vet this Monday for a blood panel. She’s doing great-really incredible how the meds can make for better quality of life, allowing for a more gentle aging process.
I’m taking a trip in October. We all thought she’d be gone by then. I’ll bring her back up to daughter’s for that week. Hoping she can continue the care I’m giving her.
Don’t know where you live…if it was near me I would gladly care for her. I used to foster for cavalier rescue usa until I burned out. Too heart breaking giving them all up after awhile, sigh. I am in NJ, doesn’t say where you are.

Oh that is so sweet Parrotnutz. I’m in the Bay Area-I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to be with the sweet dogs then let them go. My gosh, takes a strong heart. Hoping you have one or some of your own now, fostering would be difficult for me as well.
Oh, yes I have 2, had 3 but lost one last year to old age at 15.2 yrs old. Peanut, at 11 is in CHF and my youngest Auryn will be 6 in October.
