re-rider looking for a home near Stamford, Ct

Hi everyone

New here and looking for some recommendations! I stopped riding about a year ago after I graduated and started working full time but I want to start up again. Can anyone recommend a place that is close to Stamford, affordable, with good instruction and that can accommodate someone who works full time? I was pretty competitive as a junior, in IHSA and for my first couple of years as an adult. I don’t have a horse anymore, so need a place with good school horses.

thanks in advance!!

Ox Ridge & Twin Bays (Darian) and Lionshare (Greenwich) are in that general part of the world - I’m not sure how far away you would consider going. Also not sure what price range you would consider “affordable” as that part of the world tends to be kind of pricey unfortunately. They are all show barns and I don’t know if they would have school horses, but they could possibly point you in the right direction if you gave them a call.

Thanks! I’ll give them a call. Traffic is pretty awful around here and since I’d need to ride either before or after work I think 40-45 mins away from downtown, tops!

If anyone else has any suggestions, that’d be awesome!!

Visit Beval Saddlery in New Canaan. I know they have a list of area barns and contacts, and know a lot of the people who ride at these places/run them so they can usually speak to these barns.

If you’re in Stamford, definitely think about spending a good amount of money. I board my horses in New Haven County. My lesson prices are a mere fraction of lesson prices in Fairfield County (close to NYC) so expect to spend a good amount. Most of these barns are top of the line though but there are a fair share of more kid/family ones that are still up there in price, but not as much as Ox Ridge and Twin Bays. You do tend to get what you pay for and the lesson horses are nice.

Cedar Lodge is in Stamford.

I was a re-rider about 10 years ago in the area and I rode at Larkspur in Wilton. They had great horses and were wonderful and understanding of my first few rides back even though I looked a lot stronger than I felt!

I hope it’s okay to resurrect an old post. I am also relocating to the Stamford area for work this spring and am looking for a lesson barn. Hopefully within 40 minutes…but I could also consider New Haven County as Fairfield County prices are giving me sticker shock. Twin Bays (already contacted based on old threads) doesn’t currently have a lesson program. I appreciate any leads! Other adult students, opportunity for local showing, and some amenities (willing to pay a little more to avoid “summer camp” type places) would be a big bonus.

You could check New Canaan Mounted Troop (New Canaan) and Silvermine Farm (Norwalk) to see what their adult lesson program status is. My sister rode at both as an adult many many years ago.

Thank you! I had emailed Silvermine and didn’t hear back yet. Maybe I will bump it.

At least part of Silvermine’s operation goes to Ocala for the winter; that may relate to the delay.

Quinlan Equestrian is at Cedar Lodge. Lisa is a great instructor and I believe has a lesson program. She is active on Facebook.
