Really useful video - how to hunt

I found this http://rockyforkheadleyhunt.com/videos/ giving a hunting demo and what to wear advice when I was wondering around the internet.

IMHO many hunts are missing opportunities to use video/social media to promote wider participation. A picture really is worth a thousand words and watching a demonstration is a lot less intimidating than reading long, dry lists of what to wear and how to behave.

Hunting just isn’t as scary as people fear!

Go hunting and have the best fun.

Suddenly all those long-ago hunt seat group lessons come to life! We were always taught to keep a horse’s length between horses and we had to do it. Something those dressage kids whose lessons I watched years later never seemed to get.

Nice to see a gaited hunter!

Interesting that with all that info about the hunt, it never says which state it is in!

Many Hunts like to keep their heads down, due to animal rights loonies.

Good videos!

Central Ohio. Look for the video via rockyforkheadleyhunt.com.

Equibrit, fortunately in the US we have fewer animal rights loonies than you seem to in the UK. Lots of other loonies though

I swear I’ve seen this question before, but watching their video has reminded me - I know dress boots are ‘proper’ for fox hunting, but is it usual to be able to get special permission to wear field boots (or even gasp the swanky half chaps and paddocks that look like a full boot from a distance) if an injury or disability requires?

I am sure you’d have to ask the specific hunt you were riding with for permission, but is that a normal sort of thing people are okay with? (In my case, sometimes I wear a brace on one ankle and sometimes not, and a field boot gives that little bit of adjustability in the right place to allow for the extra bulk - it’s just a neoprene type brace so it isn’t TOO huge - where a dress boot bought to fit with the brace would be too big in the ankle without it, and with the modern style of very slim ankles on boots, I don’t think the brace would fit under boots bought to fit without it without putting unreasonable stress on the zips or squashing my ankle.)

I mean, I’m not planning on going hunting any time soon (no horse, out of practice riding!) but watching the video and the Anonymous Fox Hunter reminded me I was curious.

I’m sure there are a few hunts who would turn you away for not being “proper”, but I have found that (for the most part) clean, tidy and safe are the most important part. Especially for those who are trying the sport for the first time or for those that are new to the sport and need time to accumulate all of the “gear” that makes for “proper” turn out.

Asking shows respect to the hunt and tradition.

Hopefully you are surrounded by people who are more interested in hounds and hunting and won’t have a moment to look at whether you have laces or not.

I hope that you will give it a try, it is the most fun!!
