How DISTRESPECTFUL to show in a $200k + Grand Prix and NOT dress appropriately!! Utter DISRESPECT to the Show Management, spectators, and yourselves. If it’s to hot for you to wear your Show Coat, then it’s to hot to kick your horse around for a piece of the pie!!!
Ok, who are we mad at now?
I should say that if this is an FEI class, the stewards will alert you if you aren’t dressed appropriately, like they literally won’t let you in the ring. So if someone wasn’t wearing a coat, it’s because coats have been waived.
Not mad at anyone EXCEPT the jacketless riders at Upperville:cool: The TRUE professionals were dressed appropriately!!
I’m thankful that more shows are moving toward waiving coats, it has already happened in eventing and dressage. Our horses shed out their winter coats, it’s only fair that we get to shed off our coats as well when temps and humidity rise.
That said, I have no idea what the rider you are upset about even looked like. Picture? Was he wearing a T shirt?
Yeah, this reminds me of COTH whinging about unbraided horses in Olympic show jumping last year. Like I said, if people weren’t wearing jackets, it’s because jackets were waived.
It’s ok that you don’t think it’s appropriate, but obviously officials did.
By definition, they were dressed appropriately if officials waived the rule.
If YOU want to wear one, wear it by all means. I think most in that class (i just watched) are true professionals that have earned the right to make that decision for themselves once the requirement is waived by management.
there is a thought that to make the sport more accessible to general audiences, less traditional attire might be a benefit. Attire that a non horse person might associate with a sports activity. Not sure i agree, but something to think about.
TOTALLY DISAGREE!! Again, if it’s to hot for you to wear a jacket it’s to hot for the horse…you would NEVER see a Ladies Side Class waive the Shad Belly Coat!!! Suck it up and deal with it… if not … then don’t exhibit!
Horses shed their winter coats for a reason. Why can’t we? Side Saddle classes are about tradition, Hunting is a fall/winter sport when it is much cooler thus the wool coats. Let’s move forward with the rest of the sporting world and make allowances for showing in the summer in the US.
Again, I think it’s ok for you to feel this way, but the FEI and USEF don’t.
Andrew aren’t you an eventer? Like, should eventers be required to wear formal dress on cross country because fox hunters do?
So now we’ll get to see the clingy breathable white shirts clinging to all parts of the body while sweating? Eewwww
Was the rider in sweatpants? I have no issue with a show shirt (or polo shirt). Think of other elite sports…golf, polo, sailing, etc. Those competitors wear polo shirts. We’re jumping a sweaty animal over wooden sticks in 94 degree heat (in New England at least).
You know what I hate so much? Olivier Philippaerts new coat
https://www.facebook.com/GCTofficialpage/videos/vb.172920812727961/1494481517238544/?type=2&theater
It literally looks like a pattern/mock-up jacket pattern turned inside out so you can see all the seams. I hates it.
At first I was like, “Hey wait a minute where is there a Grand Prix dressage class that pays out $200K?!” Then I remembered I clicked on the H/J forum and this was a showjumping GP, because people actually care about and fund showjumping.
Honestly, that’s not nearly as bad as some of the monstrosities Karl Cook wears
Right, but I expect more from Philippaerts :lol::lol:
There was a Spanish guy at one barn I was at who wore sweatpants and converse to ride every day. And I thought he was his groom. But really he was this guy

Honestly…I might get my head chopped off for saying this, but I think equestrianism is too stuck on tradition. There is nothing functional about a stupid show coat in the summer. They look great, but seriously, what fun is showing when the sun is beating down on your black jacket with a shirt underneath? I think we ought to focus More on safety rather than what tradition is.
What’s really funny about this article is that it wasn’t really a debate, literally there are no actual quotes from anyone, so really, as far as I can tell, Esther is the only one who had a problem with it. Noelle Floyd journalism is always so poorly conceived.
For those curious- the winner didn’t wear a coat:
I do not ride at that level and I have no opinion either way. I find that I can stick out a coat in hot weather, but I do the hunters and rarely jump higher then 3 ft, so I really can’t compare to what those riders go through.
True. Though he is sponsored by H&M. He might have been “voluntold” to wear it
