Rebound migraines

Anyone here who’s had experience with this? is there an effective way to know you are, in fact, having rebound migraines cause by the drugs that are supposed to be treating it?

And how are you supposed to deal with migraines when the only things that eases the pain is taken away from you?

I only had this once after taking Indomethacin for a few weeks and then stopping. I thought I was going to die the pain was so bad. I just toughed it out through the night and the next day and it was gone. I switched to another med that wasn’t as good but at least it didn’t give me a killer headache when I stopped it. So sorry you’ve experienced this. Have you exhausted all the medications in the same class as the one that helped you but gave you a rebound headache? I still take Indomethacin occasionally but I don’t take it in succession anymore as I’m pretty sure it was the fact that it built up over a few weeks and then I stopped that caused my rebound. I hope you find a solution.

That is something you are going to have to talk to your doctor about as migraines especially take trial and error to find something that works. In general however they are caused by stopping taking meds that constrict the blood vessels causing pain when they open back up all the way. I might have that backwards but you get the idea! So switching to a med with less impact on the blood vessels is worth a try keeping in mind that often the migraine is coming from the blood vessels so nothing may work as well.

I agree with Laurierace. My brother had migraines to the extent of Imitrex injections as a pre-teen. The cause for his? Aspartame.

For years, an acquaintance had horrific migraines to the extent of being hospitalized. Several tests were performed by neurologists, various medications, etc. The doctor finally told her that she needed to see a psychiatrist because they couldn’t find any “real” medical cause for them.

They did some of their own research into this, and someone mentioned celiac disease. Another doctor did some testing, and sure enough, she was diagnosed with celiac disease. Once she became 100% gluten-free, her migraines stopped.

Excedrin migraine causes them for me…I’m trying to wean myself off them and it’s hellish. They work for the initial headache but then I get the dreaded “caffeine” withdrawel…blech…It’s hard because they are the only thing that work on a headache that isn’t a full blown migraine (for that it’s Relpax but they don’t work if it’s not an actual migraine). Aleve, tylenol, motrin, etc nothing else takes headaches away but excedrin does. Sadly it doesn’t keep them away when I’m in a cycle…apparantly it’s notorious for rebound headaches

My headaches are tied to our wild weather changes and extreme pressure changes…Calgary is famous for them and we have a very good headache clinic that I’m finally admitted too. They are saying to try to stay off the Excedrin too!

Well, already seeing a psych, not for neurological issues, but for anxiety issues and that is being taken care of.

I saw a neurologist who prescribed me these pills to take in SOS cases an then a lot of stuff happened and i didn’t have time to go see a specialist again, but as long as the drugs work, i could go on with my life, more or less. Problem is, migraine episodes became more and more frequent and i have taken so many pills in that last year that the Dr.s think the side effects might actually be making my migraines worse, and that’s the best case scenario. I am now waiting for another appointment with the neurologist. In the meantime, nothing and i mean nothing else i take will ease my migraines and it’s seriously impaired my ability to work or even live a normal life.

And because of this f*cking recession i risk getting expelled from the team i currently work with, because they can’t afford to have someone on the team who is constantly on sick leave. D@amn those fruitbat migraines…

My migraines are due to muscles. Muscle relaxers work best for me over pain meds. Try drinking lots of gatorade and water. The gatorade helps me if I down one real quick. I also get a rx pain cream that helps, or bengay. Not sure what main source is for your headaches. Try heat or ice on the back of your head-whichever feels best for you. Did you try drinking some caffeine? Sometimes I drink a MT Dew. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it makes it worse. I am trying to get off the extra caffeine drinks all together.
