Recommend clippers for golden retriever type dog?

I have a mid size golden/aussie mutt type dog that I usually get entirely clipped every spring. She has a double triple fuzzy coat and gets too hot and sheds too much; easier to transform her into Summer Dog and be done. (We had a neighbor once that thought we got a new dog every spring when we clipped Gypsy! :lol:)

She’s the only dog I need clipped; I have a purebred aussie that I might consider clipping though I know that isn’t the norm.

Maybe the occasional horse whisker or feather but not often.

The dogs are old, I don’t need state of the art clippers.

The local groomers aren’t to be trusted; fleas abound and I’ve picked up two dogs off the highway that escaped the other one. Just don’t have good recommendations here for groomers so I guess it’s up to me.

What would be a reasonable set of clippers that can handle the extremely fuzzy dog?

Do you have horse clippers? We also have a aussie cross with thick fur. We buy #10 or #7 blades and put them into the clippers we have. We have used our Wahl Stable Pro, Oster 510 cattle clippers, and Andis AGC2. They all worked but I liked the Andis best for large areas and the Stable Pro for smaller areas. Small animal clippers, like the ones sold at Walmart and pet stores did not cut thru the undercoat. We use a lot of cleaning and cooling spray to keep the blades running smooth.

Just make sure they don’t get hot and burn the dog - Kool Lube Spray them often and you shouldn’t have a problem.

I’ll see what I can find; I don’t have horse clippers but I’m going to keep my eyes open for a good deal on a pair. I only have a few more years (hopefully) left where I need to worry about Summer Dog and we don’t really clip anyone else…

Wahl KM2 clippers are my recommendation to grooming customers that want to try for themselves. They are on the low end of pricing for the type of quality needed for professional dog grooming. Powerful enough to clip through dirty cocker spaniel hair! They also have a better weight balance than other clippers I’ve tried, giving less hand fatigue for longer clip jobs.

If Luabe never invented the ivac clipper, the Wahl KM2 would be the only clipper I would ever use!

They come with a #10 blade, though that will give a very short cut leaving the hair about 1/16th of an inch long. You can get clip on combs (sometimes called rocker combs) in various sizes for far less than the longer length blades. Blades will give a smoother cut.

Thank you anemonie! That’s the info I needed! I have an old pair of Wahl’s that I’ve been using on the humans here for nearly 15 years so I’m happy to see that brand mentioned.

I did not find the clip on combs to be very helpful as an amateur; maybe someone with more experience can use them better but I found my results to be variable - lots of different lengths of hair left behind. It might be worth trying but I would probably just buy a blade (as anemonie mentioned, the #10 is very short). I use a 5F on my dog in the winter, and a 7F in the summer.

I haven’t had good luck with the combs either, I will just go with a blade. The wham/bam clip job that she’s always had is very very short with the tail left poofy! LOL Every dog in our small town had the same look; the local groomer was a one trick pony!

I’m really happy with my Wahl Moser clippers, they have the adjustable head, so I can get a variety of lengths without adding a comb or changing the blade. Although, I think the longest setting is a 10 or 15, so it’s still pretty short. They’re a little spendy at $145, but I’ve had mine for years and used them on horses and dogs and they’ve held up quite well.

For that price I’d say definitely get something you can use with detachable blades so you have the option of doing everything from a surgical clip (just in case) to a full show groom. I have the Oster A5s and bought them almost 20 years ago. Just waiting for them to die so I can buy something else (newer & lighter) but darnit they just won’t die!

We have a Golden retriever and I use my Wahl StablePro clippers on him, although the “stock” blades have been used quite a bit on my horse, so in order to do a nice job on the dog, I’d invest in a new set of blades. Our Golden doesn’t seem to mind what he looks like afterwards (which can’t be said for my boyfriend, who is the dogs father… :lol:) but it gets the job done! Last year my boyfriend went away to camp, and when he returned, he said the poor dog wasn’t going to let me near him with clippers ever again… :lol:
