Recommendations for a PPE vet in Fredrick County MD

Looking for recommendations for a vet to PPE a hunter in Rocky Ridge MD

Seller recommended Walkersville vet clinic, Kim Brokaw

I thought of Kim as soon as I saw this. Kim is incredibly qualified, wonderful to work with and reasonably priced.

Bump because there have to be more folks familiar with vets in this area!

When I was at a barn in Mt. Airy (close to Frederick), we used Monocacy Equine. I couldn’t tell you which vet in particular as my horse only ever needed her vaccinations/coggins from them. But I found them nice to deal with.

I’ve called Monocacy (boy, you will not find more mixed reviews that if you google one of their vets. Half the threads say he’s a living god among men and the others say they will shoot him in he steps foot on their property!) and Hess Equine.

Could go for either Dr. Forfa or Dr. O’Halloran ? I enjoyed both for years but bedside manner definitely turned some folks away. For an onsite PPE, average price point purchase, I would recommend Javier Donatelli or Mike Odian. I had problem horses with both vets and received great care and guidance. Limited experience with father-son Peter and Edward Radue out of Damascus Equine but liked them well. For a quality horse or one where I had a low risk threshold I’d have it trailered to Dr. Spurlock in VA or Marion Dupont/VA Tech (haven’t been there in a couple years and not current on specific vets).

I don’t recommend Dr. Hess… PM if you want…

I had my mare vetted at Dr. Spurlock in Virginia, he’s fantastic. Like I said, never used Monocacy for more than the basic shots and coggins.

I’ve been happy with Dr. Welker at Damascus Equine. She’s very sweet, and the practice as a whole is easy to deal with.

Highly recommend Dr. Odian, he picked my horses apart with a fine tooth comb before I bought them and everything turned out like he said it would. I’ve used him as a lameness Vet for years and he has always solved the problem.

I had a terrible experience with a PPE at Marion Dupont - it was expensive and the vet said one thing on the phone but wrote it up completely differently (in completely irreconcilable and very material ways), and then wouldn’t return phone calls to clarify. I’m sure that was more of an isolated occurrence than the norm, but it can happen and it created a huge mess, leaving both buyer and seller mad at them for how it was handled.

Dr. Wade Wisner at Green Glen was excellent, but it may be just outside of his territory.
