Recommendations for good quality leather leashes and collars?

My new puppy arrives on Friday. Obligatory pictures ;): #1 and (pre-crop) #2.

He needs a new leash. I’ve always been partial to leather leashes, and while I LOVE the ¼" one I use with my sheltie, I cannot for the life of me remember where I got it and it doesn’t have a brand on it.

I went looking for a leather leash at my local pet store, and I was pretty disappointed with the quality. I bought one thinking that I could oil it up, but upon getting it home and starting to roll/oil it I realized it’s actually just 2 think pieces of leather glued onto some sort of cardboard or something equally horrible.

So: any suggestions for a really good quality leather leash? We’re looking for brown leather, 6’ long, anywhere between ¾ and 1 inch wide.

And while we’re at it, my sheltie needs a new collar. So any suggestions for a brown 14" rolled leather collar?

Hogan Leather  I love their stuff…can’t wait to shop their booth at the Thanksgiving Cluster in West Springfield, MA this year! Always my first stop.

Call Mr. Schaaf at Schaaf Leatherwork - http://www.schaafleatherwork.com/
He does beautiful work - his “fine round” collars are my favorites! (They’re not rolled and stitched, they’re actually cut to a rounded cross-section.)

Quillin makes nice horse and dog leather strap goods. I’d check them first.

www.masterspride.com! He is awesome and does great custom work. I have 3 collars and 2 leashes (YES for one dog!) from him now and they break in well and hold up well.

I read on the Gary Mundy thread that not only does he make great leathers, he does collars and leashes, too.

Cuuuute! What breed is the pup?

I have a Quillin flat collar and leash (in the darker brown) for my Vizsla/Pit Bull mix that I use all the time on runs and it has broken in so nicely, soft and easy to carry, also very durable.

I love my Clever with Leather collar. I picked up my leather lead from the Tack Shack in Ocala.

Ditto the Quillen recommendation! Our dog has the flat leather collar, but they make a rolled one as well. It’s held up beautifully to being worn in the rain, through the woods, into the ocean, to the point I’d say it’s gotten better with wear.

Thanks, all! I think we’re going with the Schaaf 3/4" x 6’ medium brown leash. I’ll post when it arrives!

He’s a Briard named Chewie (George Lucas’ Briard India was the inspiration for Chewbacca/the Wookie characters). He arrives tomorrow, and I can almost guarantee I’ll be posting new pictures then!!

So cool!!! Funny, now that you say that I can really tell:) I want one!!! Never heard of the breed, off to do some research

Your pup sounds fabulous!

I see that Quillin’s been mentioned already and that you’ve already decided, but for anyone checking this in the future, I’ve got to put a plug in for Quillin’s collar plates. Cricket’s been wearing (and abusing) the same collar for 9 years and not only is it still in great shape, but the plate is still easily legible from a few feet - a good thing for the big shepherd-y looking mutt!

This just reminded me of a funny ah ha moment for my ex-boyfriend. He said that he had a Bouvier des Flandres mix dog. I made comment that that’s not a dog you see a lot of so wonder how the mix came about and he told me that the breeders show and breed 2 different breeds and that something had happened during a storm and they ended up with the mixed litter. Made sense to me how that could happen.
Later on, I get to meet the dog and it look remarkably like a pure bred Briard and not at all like a Bouvier in any way, so I mention this to boyfriend. He says, “Yeah, that’s the other breed the people raise and show. Briards”, then I saw a light bulb go off in his head. We still wonder if he somehow ended up with a purebred Briard instead of the Bouvier mix.

I know what you mean about the poor quality of leashes and collars in the large pet stores. Good quality leather goods on your dog are like wearing good shoes - they set off an outfit and show class. Our dogs have a veritable wardrobe of tack.

All these collars re so gorgeous this thread needs to be put in the reference file.
