Recommendations, Please: Who Has High-Quality Young Horses on Offer?

I’m looking for a youngster, around 5 years old, going well under saddle and jumping small courses, appropriate to age. I want a prospect for 1.30 jumpers, but if we never get there I won’t care, as long as the horse is a stunning mover with a great brain, such that we could do eq. classes and derbies, and even do well in dressage. I want forward, uphill, rhythmic canter…I’ll know the ride I’m looking for when I sit on the horse.

If the sources are located on the US West Coast or western Canada, that would be terrific–but I’ll travel almost anywhere to look at excellent prospects. Any thoughts?

What does “ on offer” mean, for sale? I know quite a few with sale horses that would fit your description but they aren’t on the West Coast, indeed they are looking at Indoors withthe older ones and thinking of the upcoming trek to WEF and Ocala with the younger and Green sale horses. IIWY, planning a week or two down there to do some shopping wouldn’t be a bad idea. Since they are there for 3 months, many do take youngsters so they can continue training them and it’s a huge buy/ sell venue. They aren’t all stupid expensive either, depending on your budget, especially the baby Greens that aren’t drop dead fancy but look to suit a Jumoer career.

Be careful with specifics, we can’t advertise on here. Just keep it general.

If you will entertain travel what about Spycoast? Barn mate of mine just bought a youngster there. By all accounts she had an excellent buying experience.

You may want to check out Carrie Hodgson at Seeking Unity Farms in Plymouth, CA. She breeds sport horses with an eye toward excellent temperament, and raises them outside (with shelters). Her youngsters are so friendly and level-headed.

They may be younger than you are looking for, but I know she works with local trainers to put a start on them, so she might have something in the realm of what you are looking for.

She has a colt out of our retired mare (a Nimmerdor granddaughter), but he’s not under saddle yet. Here’s a link to her horses on Warmbloodsales.com.

Courtney Cooper always looks to have a nice group of sales horses.

Approximate budget? You want what almost everyone wants so if it’s any sort of program and already in the US, I would think mid-five figures to start. You may be better off meeting an American agent to take you around Europe for a few days.

Agree with the above and would simply add that a truly ammie friendly, “Stunning mover” with derby potential could go for high five figures. If it has a bit of A circuit show mileage, it could be six figures.

OneTwoMany: Yup, I understand about prices. I’m planning on mid-five figures, and would actually prefer little to no show mileage, especially in the age classes. Too much stress on young joints. And sorry if my original post seemed like an ISO–I didn’t mean it that way, I’d only like to hear about sources, and I mentioned some of the qualities I’m looking for just to give an idea of what I mean by a “quality” youngster.

We’re on the opposite coast but we have some very nice young horses and also regularly import. Happy to discuss with you - you can pm me or send us an email. Happy to give you references as well - some COTHers have bought from us!

Paige Cade in Middleburg VA has two now that meet your specs and she makes regular trips to Europe. There would be plenty others to see within an hour’s drive.

Wild Turkey Farm in Oregon

Branscomb in CA, Silverthorne in CA, Wild Turkey in OR, Hyperion in VA.

I have a friend who bought two youngsters there and they’re both great.

I have a lovely 5 yr old gelding that would be very suitable. Located in Ontario.
If this post is not allowed please remove.

You should contact Wendy Staub at Magic Rose Farm (near Gettysburg, Pa), she only produces 1-2 a year, but I believe she has a few that would be lovely prospects for you. I have bought 2 from her and my mom has one as well.

I second Spy Coast. Manners, excellent proper starts, and very well bred. PM me if you would like more info.

I often have what you’re describing in the Seattle area (though don’t at the moment!):
