Registering a foal with AQHA

Anyone familiar with registering foals with AQHA? I sent paperwork in last December and I am still waiting on the papers. The filly has already been sold, and these poor people are still waiting on the paperwork.

The sire is my tb stallion. He is already DNA’ed by the JC, so all I had to do was write a letter giving the JC permission to release the DNA results to AQHA.

The dam is also mine. I filed the breeding report late. But it was filed and I sent in ALL of the paperwork for listing the stallion, breeding report and all that good stuff along with full payment - or so I thought it was full payment.

AQHA sends a letter and said I owed more money. For some reason they think there is 2 mares listed on the breeding report, and 2 foals to register. Nope, just 1 mare and 1 foal. Same registration number for the 1 mare so I am not sure how they get 2 mares out of this. I call them and straighten this out. They say ok, you owe $25 more for the stallion listing fee. Fine, I send it. I get another letter a month later stating again that I owe for the 2nd mare and foal on the breeding report. WTF!!! this goes on 2 or 3 more times. So annoying. 1 mare, 1 foal. Not so hard to understand. I think I sent in 2 more payments of $25 for something. Probably late fees for filing by now since it has taken so long.

Here we are now into September, 10 months since I sent in the paperwork on my filly. They said yesterday that I need to have my stallion DNA’ed. Seriously? I call and tell them he was DNA’ed with the JC and I already sent the letter to JC and to AQHA giving permission to release those results. AQHA said you shouldn’t have received that letter, everything is set.

Anyone else ever have issues like this? I never had to wait so long on foal registration papers before. Makes me feel silly since I sold the filly and I keep promising papers and I have nothing to give the new owners.

When I reg my AQHA weanling all be it was a little late and he was almost a yearling it took FOREVER to get his papers back. They did however cash the check right away

I’ve been with AQHA for years and I’ve never had a problem. Sorry that you have :(. Every year I’ve received all my AQHA foal papers very quickly. I do file my stallion reports on time though so maybe they take a bit longer if your report missed the deadline?

When AQHA is registering from 80,000 to 140,000 foals a year, screwups and delays seem to me to be just about par for the course.

Call them. I had a major fiasco with an AQHA filly last year. Her mother’s DNA did not match her grandmother (and mom was not an ET foal). AQHA helped me find the correct grandmother, another buckskin mare who apparently looked just like the one her 80 year old breeder had identified. With all of that I had the reissued papers on my mare and papers on the foal within three months from when I sent in the initial registration application. My foal was sold as well so a bit of a stressful situation and AQHA was a tremendous help. I did call regularly if too much time went by before I heard anything from them and they were very helpful each time I called.

Another reason to DNA test foals

OMG You sure selected a very broad range. LMAO

When a poster tries to be an expert in all things horse screw ups seem to me to be about par for the course.

Before you post BS stats try looking up the numbers first.
( it isn’t that hard).

The actual numbers for 2011 are 75225 domestic and 91074 world wide.
140,000 foals? Where on earth did you get that number??

First off - did you list your stallion with AQHA? Thoroughbreds are required to be listed with AQHA in order to even be included on the SBR.

Heh. I am very familiar with that 25.00 fee. They’re now billing me for a 25.00 DNA testing fee on my TB mare. I really don’t feel like calling them again and getting the run-around for something they swore they didn’t need (or do) when I registered my foal. That said, I think the turn around from submitting the paperwork online until I got my papers in the mail was less than a month

Yes my stallion is listed with AQHA. That is why I had to release the DNA results from the JC to AQHA. I have called them numerous times and they are working on it. I was once told to expect the papers in 10-14 business days. Then I got a letter saying that the stallion needed DNA testing. So I called and they said I shouldn’t have received that letter and that they will be issuing the papers and I will get them soon.

I went through all the paperwork prior to sending it in and made sure I had all the fees in order. I paid the fees that were stated on their paperwork for registration, listing the stallion, and the filing fees. Now its $25 here and $25 there. For what I don’t know. Very annoying though.

Propspony, they shouldn’t need a $25 fee for DNA testing on your TB mare. Your mare should be DNA tested through the JC, and all you have to do is write a letter giving the JC permission to release those DNA results to AQHA.

hmm… well I wrote them that letter when I had the mare’s paperwork done with them prior to the foaling. (when she got her appendix number) Do I need to send them a SECOND letter? I really should call them I guess. ugh.

Here’s the data from earlier years. Viney is right.

wow finally received her AQHA papers. Sent them in on December 15, 2011 (I believe that is the day they were sent give or take). Papers were issued September 17, 2012. I just got them in the mail last week. So thankful they finally came!

 Did you get your first choice name? The worst part about registering for me is trying to come up with 6 names I don’t hate.

Are you an AQHA member? The log into their member services and see what names are already taken. I only supply one name per horse (and check the do not name box), since I know that name I want isn’t taken. You don’t have to supply 6 names.

Hmm, good idea, thanks. I don’t have an online login but next time I need to name a baby I’ll have to remember that and fish mine out. According to my husband that needs to be NEVER AGAIN!
