Registering a pony?

Ok perhaps someone on here might be able to help me… Last year a bought a wonderful Welsh/TB sport pony, she did not come with any papers… I have tried to get a breeders cert. but with no luck.

The pony is quite fancy and sired by a wonderful well known, and VERY successful Welsh stallion. I would REALLY like to get her registered but I have no papers! She is 6 years old this sping so I know I am looking at a hefty fee to register her but she is very fancy and I believe she is going to have a very successful career as a driving pony!

Any suggestions as to how I might be able to get her registered in the future?

You may be able to get her Half Welsh papers with the Welsh registry. You will probably have to have her DNA tested to match the Sire. If you have information on the mare - her DNA should already be on file.

I agree, you should be able to get half welsh papers without too much trouble. Have you contacted the stallion owner? The mare should show up on their stallion service reports for that breeding year. You can get an application for registration by contacting the Welsh Pony and Cob Society in Stephens City, VA. They will also provide a DNA kit.

Good luck:)

Any idea how much DNA testing would run?

The DNA kit is $40.00.

If it is the stallion that is the purebred Welsh on your filly, you will NOT be able to register her without a breeding certificate from the Stallion Owner. It will not be good enough that the mare is listed on the Stallion Service Report. Have you tried contacting the Stallion Owner to get a breeding certificate?

A breeding certificate is often the only security a Stallion Owner has against dishonest Mare Owners. Every once in awhile, a Stallion Owner doesn’t send out a breeding certificate…as maybe the mare owner never paid the stud fee or owes the Stallion Owner money, split the semen dose and bred two mares instead of just one and never told the Stallion Owner, etc., etc. So often, the Registry has to honor what the Stallion Owner is, or isn’t doing as it may go beyond just being behind in paperwork.

If the stallion is well known and very successful…chances are the Stallion Owner may be a nice and easy person to work with. If there is an outstanding billed owed on the mare that was bred, maybe you can offer to cover the bill…or half of the bill or negotiate some way to receive a breeding certificate  It never hurts to ask or try and negotiate.

I did contact the stallion owner but it didn’t prove to be helpful, I get the impression that the mare owners/breeders of my pony, “had” a breeders cert. at one point… but I don’t know where it is at this point… so from the info that I have gathered both here and through the Welsh Pony Society, I NEED a breeders cert. to register her, is thie correct?

This is what I had previous learned but just trying to figure out if there are any other options.

Daventry is correct in that you NEED a breeders certificate from the stallion owner in order to register your pony. You can not get the registration without it. In addition, the stallion owner must have filed a stallion service report with the WPCSA for the breeding of the dam of your pony. But even if they did that, if you can not obtain a breeders cert. from them, you will not be able to get papers on your pony. As Tracy suggested, I would contact the stallion owner again and offer to try to work out a deal with them if possible in order to get the certificate. Good luck!

Did the stallion owner confirm they had indeed bred the mare?

well from a stallion owner viewpoint,if I gave out one cert. and it was “lost”, then how do I really know that <x> animal is the same one as the one I helped create?

that said, I sent the same cert THREE TIMES for one stupid pony foal in MO (ending up finally just sending the paper to the WPCSA saying "if the rest of his damned papers come in, here is my bit as well!!!):lol::lol:…he carries my prefix,I’ve never seen him and honestly don’t have any idea if he is my stallion’s animal…but he’s a gelding in no wheresville …so no matter really

Do you have a bill of sale? If so, copy and send that to the stallion owner and request a 2nd copy.

Not sure why the stallion owner wouldn’t be more helpful.

That’s what I’m wondering too. While I am super organized and send out all of our breeding certificates each October in the year that the mares were bred, I do realize that not everyone (Mare Owners) is as organized as myself  and may end up misplacing a breeding certificate.

I wonder if there is more to it, as it takes, honestly, less than 10 seconds to fill out and sign a WPCSA Breeding Certificate!
