Registering An Older Paint Mare?

Hello all!

Thank you for taking the time to look at my thread!

So, I have a 12 year old Paint mare that could have been registered at the ranch she was born on. I have both her parents names. Even have copies of her sire’s papers. We are very close to the ranch owners, since I have worked with them before and know most their breeding staff.

I was poking around on the APHA website, looking at all the registry information (was helping my cousin register his colt). I had never really thought about registering my Rain till I read something on the paper information. There was a place to select 3 year old and older (of course for a very pretty penny!)

Now if I have the information, and would be able to get the needed signatures, would I be able to send my girl in for registry? I don’t want to try and go through it all if it would not be worth it! Thus why I am here and hoping to find out:3

Thanks to all that answer, I am hoping I would find a good answer here!

If either her sire or dam is registered with APHA then it is totally up to you, but I’d say go for it! You can also register her with PtHA if you want even more options. Even if you don’t show having her registered will increase her value and will open up lots more opportunities through programs like Ride America and the PAC program if you do want to show.

Talk to the APHA, they will tell you what you need to do.

Generally, the rules may have changed since I last heard, you need to have a breeder’s certificate from the breeder, four pictures, from all sides and I don’t remember if APHA, but AQHA requires the stallion owners had submitted a list of the mares bred the year her dam was bred with her name on it.

Registries have “hardship clauses”, where they will look at each case and make exceptions to the rules where they think there is no question of what the story is.
With you knowing the breeders and the whole story, your mare is not one you bought at a sale and don’t know much, you may fit their hardship clause and get her registered thru that.

The pinto association will register practically anything with spots, that would also be one place to get her registered.

Both the sire and dam must be registered(APHA, AQHA, o TB) in order to get APHA papers.

APHA can definitely help get your mare registered and let you know what you’ll need. AND there is an older horse registration special that brings the cost down to $100.
