Registration Options for Arab

I am hoping that someone could give me some help. I guess all my reading here about registrations options are finally being put to use.

My sister-in-law (April) has purchased an unregistered Arab (Kali), both her sire and dam are registered Arabs but not her. The dam is registered but not dna typed, the stallion is dna typed.

The stallion report was filed and the breeder has breeding records for Kali.

I will not start my rant about owners who do not register their foals. The dam was sold in foal and the breeder has been after the dam’s owner to register Kali.

Last week, before April could complete the registration the dam broke a leg and was put down. The Arabian Horse Registry has been helpful but April does not have hairs to dna type Kali’s dam.

The both the stallion owner and breeder of the dam are very interested in getting Kali some type of registration. Esp. the stallion owner as Kali is headed towards endurance competition and would like to be able to link Kali to her sire.

I have suggested RSPI are there any other suggestions?

Can anyone give April some hope for Kali she is just heartbroken.

Thank you so much

Why not half Arabian, since that’s all you can prove? I don’t know their rules, but it’s the one which makes most immediate sense to me.

How about the Performance Horse Registry?

Bummer about the lack of registration; that’s a pet peeve of mine, too. I once had to chase after a breeder for three years to get a registration completed. I succeeded, but it was a frustrating ordeal. The mare is the daughter of a deceased friend’s treasured foundation mare so I am glad my efforts eventually resulted in the mare’s registration. My friend would have been mortified to have a foal not registered.

They would have to list one parent as “grade” because to be registered HA, the other parent CANNOT be “Arab or Angelo Arab”).

I’m alittle confused, because if this Kali’s (the mare in question) dam is already registered, it shouldn’t be an issue. She (the dam of Kali) should have been DNA’ed then. If she wasn’t, then you should only need DNA on Kali alone.

It’s very expensive to register a mature horse, but the Arab registry will often have “amnesty” programs, where for a certain amount of time, they will allow mature PB Arabs to be registered for the same as a foal.

PHR is a choice, but if you want to use the mare for breeding, even they require DNA (or strongly suggest it…it’s been a while since I’ve been to their site).

RPSI cannot register a mature horse. You only register foals. If you want to breed her to a WB, you could present her for approval, and she could be listed in one of the lower mare books (meaning her RPSI babies could only get COPs, IIRC).

ISR/OldNA would also accept her in their PreMare Book. But again, that would be an “approval” NOT a registration.

Hope this helps…

Per AHA rules: If the dam was born prior to Jan 1, 2002 she could have been registered via blood type parentage verification, but any of her offspring born after Jan 1, 2002 can’t be registered unless DNA for both parents is on file:
• Horses born on or after January 1, 2002: the DNA types of the horse, the horse's sire and the horse's dam have been placed on permanent record with the AHA Registry and the horse has been shown to qualify as an offspring of the stated sire and dam through DNA type testing.
So it is entirely possible that the OP’s foal could be out of a registered mare, but be ineligible for registration due to DNA not being on file for the mare. :frowning:

AHA also specifically excludes “unregistered Arabian” for the other half in Half-Arab registrations. (I have no doubt that some people have done so anyway listing the other parent as “grade” but it is against the rules.)

FWIW, I believe there is amnesty pricing in effect now
