Regu-mate Basics

Hi all! Waiting for a call back from my vet to answer this, but I thought I’d see how any of you have given Regu-mate to your horses.

Has anyone put it in apple sauce in a pan? I’ll be giving this to my mare myself bc I don’t want to barn to have to worry about it. My boyfriend will be helping as well so we have added precautions since I know the stuff can be harmful. I’m wondering if I can pre-portion it a couple days at a time?

What was the best route for you to give this to your horses? Also, how big of a difference to your mares?

I’m really looking forward to trying this as my poor mare has been in heat ALL summer long and is just so uncomfortable. After a two week trial of Regu-mate, vet said we’ll talk about cysts/tumors or spaying if there is no relief.

Thanks in advance! ❤️

I used it one summer. It shut down the heat cycles and made maresy much happier. I discontinued in the fall when she went to pasture and never resumed because her anger issues didn’t return.

I played with the dosage and found I could go down to almost 50% of the recommended dosage and it was still effective.

I measured the dose in a plastic syringe and shot it into the top of her mash daily once it was in her feed pan. No palatability problems. Once I got used to doing this I did not find myself at risk of contact with the meds.

Realize that whatever container you mix it in will be contaminated. You want zero skin contact with any trace amounts especially if you are a young woman.

I would just feed daily. Extract from the jug with a plastic syringe, squirt into a prepared mash, and feed. Whatever carrier works for you and your horse. My mare didn’t notice it in her beet pulp mash.

You will want to take the feed pan you use out of the stall if you want to protect barn staff from contact.

I have 2 of my mares on it until I can sell my super amorous gelding. I just pull up the dosage in a syringe and squirt it on their feed. Super easy. I’ve never particularly worried about contact (lord knows I’ve come in contact with a LOT of it through working for breeding vets and breeding farms) but I’ve never had or wanted children so not an issue. There isn’t any contact with the syringe top anyway.

I did the same as the posters above. I would prepare syringes in advance for the BM and put each syringe in a ziplock bag with the day of the week.

Short term use the syringes are probably fine. Long term? Definitely invest in the dosage gun. It attaches to the top of the bottle, dial in the dosage level and just squeeze onto feed or directly into mouth. No muss no fuss.

My mare has not had any issue with eating it from feed, don’t think most notice it all. It works great to keep her out of heat which made her a miserable mess of rubbing her backend raw.

I use the injectable instead. Easier and lasts longer.

I use it daily. The bottle is “drippy” and the oily consistency means it seems to migrate on it’s own. For a boarding situation, I use teensy Tupperware containers. I hate wasting syringes and the rubber plungers give out in a few weeks, one month tops. Horses don’t seem to find it any problem to eat. (Just put on top of feed.)

They actually seem to like the taste, at least mine did.

My mare is on daily Regumate and I use a screw-on syringe to load the dose. There is no leakage at all, but I still wear gloves when handling it. I’ve used the same syringe for over a year. I squirt it in top of her soaked feed and add a little molasses-flavored water to make sure she eats it all. Works great.

Regumate is oily so it will go through thin plastic (like ziplock bags) and it eats the rubber plungers in regular syringes pretty quickly too, so have plenty on hand. I fed my mare Regumate for 2 years (I had her spayed when it stopped working). I board and the barn owner was not willing to mess with syringes or dosing pumps - everything has to be already in one container. So I bought plastic tupperware containers, put her grain in them, and added the Regumate to the top. I made up 7 days worth at a time and it remained effective and was easy for the barn owner to just dump into the feed bucket, put the lid back on, and put it back in the feed room for me to fill for the next week. I stored the bottle of Regumate at home in the fridge.
