Regu-mate Dosing

Hi all, Just started my mare on regumate. I have had mares before but this is a first for needing hormonal treatments.Wondering about dosage for those who have used it before. Vet suggested 5 ml on feed daily (for next couple months then we will take her off for the winter). After reading more about it the suggested dosing seems to be 1 ml/100 pounds of body weight. I am skeptical why the 5 ml rather than 10? Anyone else used a lower dose? This is day 3 of her on it, I think I am seeing a difference but could just be placebo effect for now. She’s not huge, 15.2 hh warmblood. Vet can be hard to get a hold of unless emergencies so thought I would ask around here.

She has been scoped for ulcers, chiro, etc., so all other things have been looked at. She seems to be a very uncomfortable mare when coming into heat and going out of heat.

I started my horse on the recommended 10 ml but quickly dropped her to about 7 ml. For these kinds of drugs, the lowest effective dose is a good thing to find. You will only really know if the dose is working when she does or doesn’t come into heat. When I took my mare off Regumate for her pasture vacation she was in full heat about 24 hours later. No heat at all during the Regumate summer, and more mellow otherwise.

Always better to start at a lower dose and increase if needed. If you start at the higher dose, you’d never know if you could get away with the lower.

Just curious why you went with regumate instead of depo? The daily dose and risk of getting it in your system and all are a pita. Is there an additional benefit I’m not thinking of?

Thanks all. I emailed the vet and 5 ml is recommended. It is ‘extra strength’ which I missed. It is 4.4 ml versus the normal 2.2 so I am assuming that is why the 5 ml.

@jonem004 Medroxyprogesterone (Depo-Provera®) is now a banned substance according to Equine Canada. Just added this year. Not sure about USEF. Vet also prefers the liquid form, says she does not like doing injections unless necessary. Also says she thinks the regumate works better. I had initially asked about the shots (for the reasons you mentioned) and she instead prescribed the regumate. Pretty easy, I just make sure to wear gloves, she eats it right off her food, and she’s usually picky.

The summer I used it, I decanted the large bottle into a smaller bottle that was easier to manage, and I used a big syringe to measure the dose. I shot it into her food at the last minute so it wasn’t contaminating all my mash buckets. once I got handy with the syringe, really there was nothing touching my skin at all. But rubber gloves are a good idea.

They make a dosing gun for regumate—you can set it to the daily dose and then you don’t have to touch it.

Re: Depo, my repro vet says depo doesn’t actually work on mares, only geldings. He thought it was more of a placebo effect when used on mares.
