Rehab/layup facility recs in Zone III/Area II/Mid-Atlantic

Exploring options for what to do with my mare while she rehabs and I have surgery.

Rehab is nothing particularly special; she’ll need tack-walking or hand-walking 4-5 days a week plus limited turnout in a medical-size paddock for a bit, as well as access to a vet who can Shockwave. She’s very easy to handle. Looking for 90 days, and ideally for something in Maryland, but happy to go within a 3-4 hour drive for the right place. I prefer her to have free-choice hay.

Any recommendations (or disrecommendations–feel free to PM with those if you’d rather!) are appreciated, along with ballpark costs!

May be overkill for your needs but this place is incredible.

I’ve heard great things about Nor Mar Farm, north of Baltimore.

Cooper Williams sends a lot of his horses up there, including one rehabbing from our barn (came back sound, owner was very happy).

Thank you both, @Laurierace and @Feathered_Feet! I have calls into both facilities, plus Rigbee based on a previous recommendation elsewhere on the forum. Fingers crossed that someone has a stall available.

And you’re right that she doesn’t really need an Equine Salt Spa plus Foxhall’s other accoutrements, but I want to send her to the best place I can find/afford, because:

a) I won’t be able to be hands-on due to my own rehab (also I’m pretty sure no one is sending me to a Salt Spa as part of that so I guess I will have to live vicariously), and
b) many dreams are pinned on this suicidal 1200 lb animal and I am SOL if she doesn’t come back

I have twice sent a horse to Kesmarc in Kentucky, which has similar offerings (and is fabulous, but further away than you want to be), and I called several similar facilities like Epic in Ocala, and what you will likely find when they return your calls that there are a certain number of treatments included in your daily rate, or your package, and the rest would be a la carte add ons. For my horse, the daily rate included one water therapy, so she would alternate days on the aquatread and the cold spa, or alternate swimming and the aquatread. If you wanted to them to do the aquatread or swim, and then stand in the cold spa after, that was an additional charge. So, you will be able to tailor what you do and don’t want to do, and don’t be afraid to say no to extras you don’t think are needed! Some places were pushier about that than others (Kesmarc was not at all pushy about it, I loved working with them).

Nor Mar is awesome- I have used them several times and they are incredible. If you don’t need as much as what they or Foxhall provides, though, I would recommend very, very highly Emily Shields (Physio Equine Solutions). Her farm is quiet, she takes meticulous care of the horses, offers a few modalities, and is an all-around great person to board a rehab with. https://physioequinesolutions.com/horse-boarding-rehabilitation/

When I needed two months of strict stall rest with only brief hand-walking the second month, Joe and Brenda at Nor Mar didn’t have room. I really didn’t need the treadmill, so I found Emily and it was perfect.

ETA Bonus: she had a stall camera set up for me so the first week when I was extra paranoid about my guy moving around too much, I could spy on him and feel better. I’ve recommended her to a few other people and they have all had great experiences.

A friend had a great experience sending a rehab horse to Furlong’s Soundness Center in NJ.

www.rehab.vet - the farm is beautiful, Dr Johnson is lovely, and the pricing is really reasonable compared to some of the other options.
