Rehabbing a Toy Dunking Kitten

Our new kitten has decided that the best way to finish off her toys is to drown them. Every morning and frequently throughout the day I find soaking wet mice and other toys strewn around the kitchen and all the water bowls dumped. My husband caught her today as she unsuccessfully tried to soak a plastic stick that she had carried in. Such a monster. We have two water bowls down, they’re not very big but are sturdy enough for normal use. Obviously they are not designed to withstand the monster.

So does anyone have any suggestions for rehabbing a toy dunker? Are there any water bowl systems out there that prevent spillage and deter dunking? Anyone dealt with one of these before? Thanks

Haha nope, but I have one that does the same! She will put them in there after she is done playing and then retrieve them and continue playing with them. I just let her do it and give them fresh water. She doesn’t spill the water when she does it, but I just find it kind of gross.

Before I got this one I one time found a fake mouse in the toilet bowl needless to say that one got flushed. It was small enough to make the great journey. That one was a product of my male cat who flings the cats around by the tail, so he can then go retrieve them from where they land.

Good Luck and maybe someone will have a suggestion on how to fix it. I just never bothered.

I thought you had a new breed of cat I had not heard about it…

Alagirl, me too. I have a bunch of foster kittens and I frequently find their toys in the water dishes. I always use very sturdy, deep and wide dishes for water, and I don’t really mind finding toys in the water. I have always thought it rather clever.

I suppose I don’t mind the toy dunking as long as she doesn’t flood the kitchen. I’m looking at some pet water fountains now that look sturdy enough to keep from tipping. Maybe the running water will entertain her and keep her out of trouble… or cause even more trouble, sigh, who knows with her. The Culprit http://www.flickr.com/photos/29598352@N03/9381976686/. She’s the orange one although the other is just as naughty as she is.

Liar! Pure innocence! PURE INNOCENCE!

try a car mat with a raised edge, or welcome mat to contain the flood.

My cat is 11 years old and dunks her toys. She also likes to splash the water out of the bowl… I can’t walk in my kitchen without shoes on or I’ll have wet socks/feet. She has a big heavy ceramic bowl which is a little harder to move around, but she still puts her feet in there and knocks the water out.

Don’t let her precious eyes and sweet cinnamon swirls fool you. She’s a monster I tell you. A MONSTER! Seriously though the car mat is a great idea. I was also thinking about using one of those dish drying mats to to absorb the mess. I thought that if I could wear her out she wouldn’t be so tempted to drown anything, but even after playing with a new flying feather toy and a good hour of fun with the shopping bags, she was still dunking. Sigh. At least she is unbelievably adorable.

She is without any question unbelievably adorable. I have a cat fountain, and so far I haven’t found any toys in it, but I think that might just be random.

Wow, I’ve probably had 30 cats through the years and never heard of this

Silly cat.

What about placing the water bowl on a cafeteria dining tray?

Just be thankful that she is not drowning them in the toilet. More disturbing to fish out, and if you don’t see it, can cause a multitude of problems. And yes, I know a cat that does this. When she finally caught a REAL mouse, she also left that in the toilet.

When I had a dunker I switched from water bowls to mugs. The smaller diameter opening made it less fun to swish things around. I usually left a mug on each bathroom counter as well as on the floor next to the food bowls. Spreading the water sources around made the cats happier for whatever reason.

My JRT used to do that! She’d dunk the toys in head first as though trying to give them a drink.

This is why the toilet lids are always down in our house! Not only did the toys get tossed in them but we also found that one of our cats thought it they made fantastic swimming pools when he was a kitten. He would thrash around happily, soaking himself and much of the bathroom.

Kitty? Kitty?

Our kitten drowns things and also splashes water everywhere. Our older cat used to tip over his water bowl all the time too.

Toilet seats are always down in our house - the older cat drinks out of them given half the chance (eww gross) and the kitten seems obsessed with them.

Mine seems to have finally outgrown that tendency. Used to be no hair elastic was safe from an untimely, soggy, watery death

My sister named her newest cat Otter - for this very reason. All toys end up in the water dish.

Our cats occasionally dunk but their new thing seems to be playing in the dog’s water dish (bigger=MORE FUN!!). I know it’s them because the dog sleeps on my bed overnight (door closed to contain her) and there’s ALWAYS a mess by her dish in the morning. Sneaky little buggers.

We also have to keep toilet lids down because otherwise the seat ends up covered in tell-tale black hair from our 20lb fluffball.

ETA: This post contains nothing helpful but I FEEL YOUR PAIN.

My Siamese has a toy mouse that gets dunked in the toilet. I guess I’m not as squeamish as some folks, I just remove it until the next time.
