Does anyone know where to get reins that clip onto and off the bit? I can’t find them anywhere!
Schneiders.
Or you can just buy the clips and attach them to your reins.
Schnieders will or anywhere that sells western tack will too.
Just a little beware though, the clip-reins can make clattery noises, and some horses really hate the jingling, either the sound or perhaps they can feel the vibrations of metal-on-metal in their mouth, I dunno.
You could just buy a couple of clips, they’re only a dollar or so. You can probably find them at your local tack store. I just bought some for my side reins and breast collar/martingale.
I know National Bridle used to make a ‘quick change’ bridle so the whole bit could be changed with four clips. I would check any company that makes saddle seat training bridles.
Either that or as others have said, just thread your reins through a set of clips and voila!
Right on, the metal on metal. It also makes for inconsistant cues with the reins as they are heavy and rock back and forth on the bit ring.
I thought that same thing about the metal on metal, but my trainer recommended them for lunging. I think I may hold off. Knock on wood, twisting the reins has been fine thus far… Thanks!
I have all my reins with clips - only because I have 10 horses and two pairs of reins I actually like! They’re also wonderful for lunging.
I just went out and bought clips and attached them to my reins myself. Not a big deal. I use this style…
I think Dressage Extensions has some sort of a quick change bridle they are advertising-not hook and stud or buckle, but it looks like there must have be some sort of metal brace inside the end of the rein and cheek piece (to keep it ridgid) and a leather keeper that slides down. Worth a look.
clips are a horrible idea. how long does it take to unbuckle and rebuckle two buckles? keep your leather clean and supple and it probably takes as much time as running your stirrups up and down.
Some of us prefer hook studs, which don’t always come off easily. I dislike the look of buckles, but I also dislike the notion of clips.
if it is the “look” of buckles that you dislike, then you must despise the “look” of clips. clips look hideous on a leather bridle. they may only be used on a neon pink nylon bridle belonging to a 12-year old (or an endurance rider).
It’s very easy to make any pair of reins into clip reins using the snaps shown above. Many tack shops, Agway, Home Depot etc…should carry them.
I’ve always used clips on reins on some of my bridles. I hate fumbling with buckling and unbuckling reins. I don’t think they look “hideous” unless you’re a diehard DQ, then I guess I can’t help you with that. No, I wouldn’t show in them, but for normal work at home I see no problem. I just buy them for 69 cents at the farm store.
thanks for chiming in endurance rider.

I don’t think she rides endurance all the time. And saying clips are only for little girls and endurance riders is ignorant and arrogant at best. It’s your opinion they are ugly, DON’T shove it down everyone else’s throat.
truthfully, i don’t care if they are ugly or not. the only reason i even brought up the appearance was because someone else said that buckles were unattractive.
they have a horrible feel.
they rattle the horse’s mouth.
they are heavy and droop the rein if you don’t have a perfect contact.
if you are trying to create elasticity and a smooth supple contact, they work against you.
if you don’t care about any of these things, then hey! they are a tiny bit more convenient than buckles. this should save you approximately 10 seconds in your busy life when you don’t have to worry about your horse’s comfort or preference.
You can get light plastic, strong clips at TSC and Home Depot, etc.
They’re great for working a horse on the longe and then schooling. Of course you wouldn’t wear them to a show.

You’re still trying to force your opinions of them on others. You don’t like them? That’s fine. But other people do. Get over it!
