Reins

My reins are approaching the end of their lifespan, but I hate the thought of finding new ones. I cannot find any that I love. I am currently using regular rubber reins (with small bumps). I cannot stand web or ones with stops. I have used the ThinLine, and am not a huge fan of the give. I have very small hands, so cannot deal with bulky reins. What do y’all like?

I love Thinline reins, but my other favorites are from Solo equine. No stops and they are SO soft.

I’ve been looking for new reins to pair with my new Fairfax bridle and have been wanting to test out a pair that just have the rubber on the inside. I prefer reins without stops, too, and I don’t want them to be too bulky between my fingers. So last week, I visited the Equine Exchange in PA and ended up getting a pair of Montar reins that seem to fit the bill and didn’t break the bank. I’d prefer buckles to hooks, but whatever. I just didn’t feel like spending a bunch of money on a pair since the bridle is rather spendy. I believe these are the same ones that I purchased:

I have small hands too… and I hated rubber reins but I really needed them. I found Schockemohle make a great rubber rein, that is very thin rubber. I have almost child sized hands and these have worked great for me. They were also only $50 CND. So the price is a steal too.

I have very small hands, want something easy to clean, and really don’t like rubber reins that might flop/move too much if you have a very light horse. I ride in flat leather reins without stops from Collegiate. Super easy to clean and fit nicely in my hands.

I’m used to them, but some people complain they are “slippery” when they try them. If it is raining hard, I will switch them for flat leather with leather stops just for the ride in the rain.

I have small hands too. Used to use a pair of rubber lined reins but they were always kinda stiff feeling in my hands. When the tiny pimples starting breaking off from cleaning I switched to the Nunn Finer Soft Grip rubber reins. These are my absolute favorite! https://www.nunnfiner.com/Nunn-Finer-Soft-Grip-Reins-p/282.htm

I just got a pair of the ps of Sweden reins, softy with super grip… I’ve never had reins so thin, grippy and lightweight… I had a fairly catastrophic injury to my right hand about 12 years ago (think thumb reattach) and while the surgery was far more successful than hoped for with functionality, I’ve found that aging, arthritis, etc. has it’s own set of complications. Plus I ride/drive 1000lbs of forward neck (Fjord) so I spend my life looking for something my hand can hold and grip while stopping a freight train… every single rubber lined grip rein has been way too thick/unbendy until these. The Schockemohle soft leather reins have been relegated to the other bridle.

They do have hand stops and are rubber lined but they are super soft and wafer thin. Farm House had them in stock about a month ago when I was at Katydid/TIEC

Traditional rubber reins feel way too bulky to me, but I LOVE the Nunn Finer Soft Grips! They hold up well, too.

For those who do like rein stops, they just started making them with grips–I picked up a pair and really love them, too.

Thanks guys! I will look into those. I have to say I rank rein shopping up there with jeans.

I like the Tekna synthetic (I do not think it is rubber) reins.

I second this suggestion! I’ll never go back to another type of rubber rein.
