Relocating to SW Utah ... what are good horse communities?

I have a new job in Zion National Park. I have short-term housing. Eventually, I’d like to have a permanent home, maybe a small acreage for 1-2 horses, few chickens, et cet

Any suggestions on towns/communities to check out for land? One big plus would be access to public land for riding as well as horsey community/neighbors.

I love to trail ride, do a little dressage (not necessarily compete).

Don’t have any advice for you, especially because I just moved to the Nashville area, but I did want to say congratulations on your new job!!!

There seem to be more readers there than here.

Congratulations, that is supposed to be such a beautiful part of the country to live in.

I have no help to offer… but congrats! It sounds like an amazing opportunity.

I’ve been so down on middle TN lately, I kind of want to say, “TAKE ME WITH YOU!”

No advice but I was just there last week. It’s so beautiful. Congrats.

I don’t know how close you want to be to Zion? Salt Lake City is about an hour?! I dunno that there’s a WHOLE lot of civilization SUPER close to Zion. It’s beautiful though!

I checked out Salt Lake City and nixed it entirely because I could.not.keep.a.horse.there. Not when I was used to the way we keep horses in the Mid-Atlantic. Where are you coming from?

I recall Sandy being the primary horse community and there were some reasonably priced “farmettes” (using that term lightly as they are not what we’d call farmettes here-- but properties with fenced land and some shelter).

Salt Lake City is more like 4 hours from Zion. And since Sandy is right by SLC, that’s out too. I have no idea on southern UT, but just wanted to point out that SLC was not going to be remotely feasible.

Oh man, what park did I go to then?! Ok, sorry… Ignore my suggestions!

Ok, embarrassing! I went to Zion when I was in Las Vegas. I have no idea what park I went to when I visited SLC?!

OP, I can tell you just about anything you want to know about any of the towns in and around that area, having spent time in St. George. Send me a PM if you have questions or more specific towns you might want to look at , depending on which side of the park you will be working in.

No worries, maybe Timp Caves?

Maybe Capitol Reef or Arches or Canyonlands…?

Probably not either Zion or Bryce (Utah is full of National Parks that, IMO, are just spectacular!)

I literally have NO IDEA.

I remember it going like this… we went to a gorgeous national park. I thought “I dig it.” We ate at an amazing Mexican restaurant. Still digging. We drove around downtown. Cute, I dig. We visited 3 boarding facilities and looked at a “farmette”… and I was packing my bags.

I cannot recall which one but now I realize that I saw Zion for sure from LV (SO is from LV so we’ve visited several times, he had a job offer in SLC and that’s why we scoped the town). I blended the details. Sorry!

I know there is a horsey community in St George, as there is a QH circuit there, maybe in Spring?, and a show grounds.

Lucky you, Zion is beautiful country. Spectacular hiking and lots of opportunity for trail riding. We have lots of Federal and State land, so your trail choices are many.
Here is a dressage trainer in St. George which is close to ZNP. You should contact her for info about the area.I have heard both she and the barn are nice.

There are also trainers in Mesquite NV which is about an hour from St. George and lots of trainers in Vegas which is about an hour beyond that. Remember you are driving empty highways so the drive itself is not too bad. The desert SW of Utah is amazing and addicting. Enjoy.
