My dog is on amoxicillin for 28 days to treat non-symptomatic lyme disease. The problem is that it makes him feel very lethargic and generally yucky (but no vomiting). He gets Gastri-Soothe before each dose, as well as a slice of bread (so his stomach isn’t empty). He doesn’t get yucky right after a dose; it seems to start 6-8 hours after a dose.
The vet didn’t have any more ideas, so I’m wondering if anyone knows of remedies for the side effects of the amoxicillin, perhaps something homeopathic or herbal.
My dog thanks you!
You’ll get much more response for this in the menagerie forum, I sent the mods a note to move it there for you.
I advise clients to feed a live-culture plain organic yogurt or a good probiotic on the food (not at the same time you give the Abx though, I prefer they give these with a few hours separation)
If your dog is really dumpy, I would consider switching him to a different abx, sometimes pets don’t tolerate certain meds very well. You may want to ask your DVM what he likes to do in situations like this-did your dog not tolerate the doxy?
Whenever I used abx, I give a probiotic inbetween doses. It does no good to give things at the same time, because not only is it rarely a contact issue (meds to the stomach), but it’s usually because the abx kill too much of the good bacteria along with the bad.
It CAN be a contact issue, so a coating can be helpful. But giving the probiotic inbetween the abx dosing can be even more helpful
So, if you have to dose every 12 hours, then if you can dose at 7 and 7, then give the probiotic at, say, 9 and 9, or 10 and 10, that can be very, very helpful
My dog was on a variety of high powered antibiotics for 9 weeks and the best thing I found (cheap, too) was giving him an ounce of cherry flavored (the ONLY flavor he liked) generic antacid in a dose syringe an hour before the pills. I also ended up giving him cooked oatmeal (made with beef broth) WITH the pills. Meds didn’t cure his problem, but his appetite stayed good for the duration!! Good luck!
