Cigar will always have an extra special place in my heart. 1995 was not a good year for me; I spent much of it mired in crippling depression. Cigar was the bright spot; he made me remember how much I loved Thoroughbreds and racing. Finding something, anything really, to be passionate about was the first step up the stairs to recovery. He made me smile.
When he died in 2014, I felt like I had lost a friend.
That was great. What a nice horse he was.
Thank you for sharing it.
What a lovely piece. He was an all star and gorgeous and retirement as well. I visited him at the horse Park several times.
He is one of my favorites. There are certain old race videos I watch year after year. The 1995 Breeders Cup Classic is one. And Tom Durkins race call as Cigar crosses under the wire “and here he is, the unconquerable, invincible, unbeatable Cigar!” That still gives me shivers.
