Alright folks I bought an older 2h trailer this week. The type with the removable top to the back doors. The prob ensues in that the tops were lost before I bought it. I am NOT a fan of them being totally open at top for various reasons - which include crap flying into the trailer, in horses eyes etc. Has anyone here managed to either find replaceable tops for older trailer doors or suggestions for like a canvas/ mesh something at the top? Thank you!!!
You might be able to order replacements from the trailer maker. Alternative would be to have the local welding shop make some for you. I would see if anyone I knew had such doors to photo, so welding folks had a better idea of how they are constructed. Show rolled edges for stiffness, folded lip over lower door edge to keep rain out, etc. You should get the latches you want for them to put on for closing and, clips to keep tops open.
I always leave the top of my trailer open for cooling and ventilation. A fly mask will prevent any stuff from blowing in horse eyes.
My first trailer was a 1974 Cotner that was extra high. Back then they came with a roll down canvas that covered the top and snapped in place. The problem was that I am short and the trailer was tall. I could not roll it up or down without standing on a stool. Behind a horse on a slanted ramp rolling down a canvas tarp was not really where I wanted to be.
We had a local trailer place that made enclosed trailers for racing cars. They also inspected trailers, sold some horse trailers and landscape trailers. I had them make me top doors. I did not go fancy with windows just basic doors that could be latched back so I had the option to trailer open or closed.
I like the option of trailering with them open or closed depending on weather. If you have them made I would make sure that is an option since that may change your resale value. I personally would not buy an enclosed style horse trailer that I could not open the top back doors. Stock trailers are a different story since their ventilation is so totally different.
