Removing a Monogram

Just curious if anyone has removed a monogram off a wool dress sheet? If so, was there any damage to the sheet and how difficult was it to remove?

My barn wants us to buy custom wool dress sheets - there is a dress sheet on ebay that looks to be in good condition that is in the barn colors and from the exact manufacturer that the barn wants me to buy the dress sheet from - however, it does have monograms on it that I would need to remove. It would save me quite a bit of money to buy the dress sheet of ebay, but it wouldn’t be worth it if I couldn’t at least somewhat easily remove the monogram myself.

When people advertise stuff for sale with monograms, they often say “easy to remove”. I have not found this to be the case. If there is a felt patch on the reverse side, remove the stitching with a sharp stitch ripper (As in, get a new one. Don’t use the one you take braids out with). There will probably be tiny holes from where the stitching was. With wool you might be able to get the fibers to mesh back together but don’t count on it.

Best if you plan to re-embroider the sheet in the exact same place.

I once ripped the embroidery out of 20 denim work shirts and half a dozen hoodies. Some came out beautifully and others did not. The denim did better because the material was “harder” and the sweatshirt was a bit of a nightmare.

The larger/wider the lettering the better it comes out. Depending on the weight of the material, you may be able to close up any resulting rat holes with matching thread.

I have removed embroidery from a jacket… very painstakingly (as in gently snipping through and pulling out one thread at a time)… and it still had little holes and pinches in the fabric. You can totally tell it was there. So I wouldn’t count on it coming out nicely unless you plan to place a new monogram over the area to cover it.

All the above.

Monogramming is my business. And so is removing. Showing and marks depends a lot on the fabric you are removing it from. A light dress sheet? Totally going to see marks no matter how careful you are about removing it. Steaming afterwards helps close and minimize the marks but you will still see them. There is also the chance there will be sizable holes in the fabric as well if you are not careful when removing.

Can you post a picture of the monogram? The stitch type used also determines the easability or removal.

Can you get a monogram patch to put on top? That’d be easier…

I’d tell the BO that if they wanted me to have that sheet, they could pay for it.

Honestly, I’d leave the monogram on and tell them it stands for your horse’s nickname.

Love this idea. “Oh yeah, you did not know I call him Heza Classy Hot Princess sometimes?”

I was in a barn that did last names. My last name is 9 letter long (ouch! if they charge by the letter) I told the BO/trainer I was going to pick a 2 letter Chinese name & just say I was engaged when I bought the sheet.

I mean, are we talking there’s a whole name monogrammed on the thing or like a standard diamond with three letters kinda thing? Either way, I’d still run with, “It’s his super secret private nickname.” but one is going to be a lot more fun than the other…

And another thing! If you get your horse’s whole name monogrammed on a sheet, does it not seem weird to other people for you to sell it? I mean, it’s got his name on it. It’s HIS. Who wants to wear clothes with someone else’s name on them? “Yeah, my name’s really Mike, but I just felt like wearing Fred’s sweater today…”

Boggles the mind, I tell ya!

(Sorry, it’s one of those days in Mosey Land)

Thank you all so much for your responses! Honestly, if it was just a last name I would totally just leave it; unfortunately, it has another farm name on it, so that would have to be removed.

Its still not “cheap” so I think I will pass and spend the extra money on a new one. Thanks again!

Interesting responses.
I have removed several monograms myself with good results.

The first was a barn jacket I bought myself, that had the farm name on it.
It is the warmest jacket I own, but I no longer ride, nor ride at that farm… it came out fine. This is one of those fleece lined, windbreaker outside type jackets.

I also shop at Salvation Army almost exclusively. I found a couple lovely wool throws that had a monograms/company names on them, ripped the out, easy-peasy and look fine.
